This volume studies the biblical book of Judges, which focuses on the period in Israel's history when the nation was ruled by a series of judges. The book describes the progressive deterioration of the nation as a result of the violence and idolatry of the people. Yet the nation also encountered the astounding graciousness of the God who remained faithful to them.

The book shows that when we do not worship and serve God, the results are destructive and ultimately deadly. The story of the book of Judges is the story of a long deterioration in Israel's history when its leaders and people continued to turn away from God and worship false gods or idols. The painful lessons of this unfaithfulness were destruction, time and time again.

For instance, in the more recent Judges volume by J. Clinton McCann, the three introductory chapters in the book are treated thematically under the headings Fighting and Smiting: The Canaanites Remain and Serving God or Serving Baal? Exploration of these two themes set the stage for everything that follows in Book of Judges. McCann bridges the historical divide between the context of Judges and our modern situation

The entire Interpretation series, recommended to me by my Episcopal priest as part of a four-year course, is outstanding. Although each book is directed toward the serious student of Scripture, the books are immensely readable and fascinating.

Since this is a scholarly work, I would wish, since I purchased a Kindle version, that the page numbers were available. It makes using the book in any academic context impossible to source. I should have purchased the paper version!
