the subject of "healing" ... that is something way beyond the scope of my understanding and being! ... ... if you see it the same way, read this book, it will open a whole new understanding to this mystery ... ... have purchased several copies and given them away ... ... ... current plan is to use this book as a study reference by our "pastoral care"group ... ... this book is a keeper and surely worth a second read with pencil in hand ... ... would likely rate at 6 stars if possible!

I will be using this text to create my first worship service (Presbyterian) called The Longest Night. Because we will have individual healing with the laying on of hands and anointing with oil, we will be training the members of the healing teams and plan to use it along with some other texts to develop the training. It will be a secondary resource as I found it cumbersome to read.

There is a lot of information in this book on how to establish a healing ministry in a church, including much information about the pitfalls to watch out for in a healing ministry. The authors point out how a healing ministry put on by TV-type evangelicals who are not supervised by any ordained authority, can do a lot of harm to people by promising them healing which may not take place. This book recommends that healers work in teams and see supplicants over a period of time to help them find God and get to the root of their problems. While the authors do try to show how they work with doctors it looks a little like the healers are trying to practice psychology to find a psychological or sin root to all diseases. The team goes after these alleged causes of disease and says their methods won't look like practicing medicine or psychology if they always make a healing session into a religious event. I think this approach could be wrong and people could be damaged, but the examples in the book of people the authors have helped shows them rooting out the sin in a supplicant's life or other problem in their interpersonal relationships, and scoring a home run by leading the supplicant down the correct path to health.

The book has a strong Roman Catholic bias, probably understandable since one author is a Priest. There are subtle criticisms of healing ministries in Protestant churches but some of these churches have good healing ministries. If the authors wanted to be helpful to a wider audience they could be a little less rigid about the Roman Catholic framework or at least understand that there are valid healing ministries which are not Roman Catholic but could benefit from their knowledge.

My group chose a different book so I did not read it at this time so I do not feel I can rate it.

In this beautifully crafted book Jan Alkire and Father Leo Thomas O.P. give concrete ways for lay people to work in their parishes, as part of a parish team, to bring compassion to the hurting, to help people get to the roots of pain and help bring healing to those who are suffering.
