The Greatest Thing In The World: Walking in Love ebook

by Henry Drummond

Like George MacDonald, Henry Drummond was a 19th century Scotsman who wrote books with a Christian theme. Drummond goes to 1 Corinthians 13 to show that love is the greatest thing and the ultimate thing in the Christian's life. If there is no love, there is no Christianity.

Like George MacDonald, Henry Drummond was a 19th century Scotsman who wrote books with a Christian theme. I read MacDonald because he was admired by an author whom I admire, . I read this book by Drummond because it impressed another man I admire, John D. Clemens, my grandfather. He uses as an illustration the elder son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son and his unloving attitude.

First Published c1880 EVERY one has asked himself the great question of antiquity as of the modern world: What is the summum bonum-the supreme good? You have life before you.

First Published c1880. THOUGH I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. EVERY one has asked himself the great question of antiquity as of the modern world: What is the summum bonum-the supreme good? You have life before you. Once only you can live it. What is the noblest object of desire, the supreme gift to covet? We have been accustomed to be told that the greatest thing in the religious world is Faith. That great word has been the key-note for centuries of the popular religion; and we have easily learned to look upon it as the greatest thing in the world.

Henry Drummond (1851-1897) draws out the profoundly deep meaning of I Corinthians 1. This was first published in 1874 but the truths this book presents are eternal.

Henry Drummond (1851-1897) draws out the profoundly deep meaning of I Corinthians 13. He explains how if we love we will automatically be keeping God's commandments. As you read you may get the feeling that Henry Drummond lived the truths he presented in this very short book. By reading "The Greatest Thing in the World" you will fully understand what truly bring happiness into your life. I really enjoyed reading this message of hope. The supreme thing, in short, is not a thing at all, but the giving of a further finish to the multitudinous words and acts which make up the sum of every common day. For there is no debtor in the world so honorable, so superbly honorable, as Love. Love is success, Love is happiness, Love is life.

Henry Drummond's emphasis on the importance of love is summed up for me on page 53 of this little book: "The final test of religion at that great Day is not religiousness, but Love; not what I have. Встречается в книгах (477) с 1810 по 2008.

CAUTION: This is NOT the original sermon delivered by Henry Drummond. Down in the "Read more" part of the product description, it says, "This a reproduction of a historical artifact, this work may contain missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc." There ARE missing and blurred pages, etc. I feel the product description should have put this information up front instead of hidden in the "Read more" section. It actually looks as though someone cut the pages with a pair of scissors and pieced them together. The pages aren't square to the binding/cover like a normal book. This was purchased as a gift but I would be embarrassed to give it to anyone. VERY disappointed in this purchase and plan to return the book.

The book's small but the message is huge. The topic is love. Drummond explains the wonderful chapter about love found in 1 Corinthians 13. . All one needs to know about love is found in these words, words so moving that the passage is often read during wedding ceremonies. Our pastor mentioned the book during a sermon and I made note and ordered it from Amazon. Surprisingly, I later found a copy of the book in my own library, it had been a gift to a relative, given in 1929. The book from Amazon is a small paperback, mine is in a beautiful leather tooled cover with lettering in gold. The words are the same. and the message is the same.

I received a collection of Henry Drummond's sermons when I graduated from High School fifty four years ago and they have had a major impact on my life. If you give this as a graduation gift, encourage the recipient to read more than "The Greatest Thing (gift) in the World". Love is undeniably the greatest gift, but some of his other sermons are equally important and are likely to be even more relevant at different times in one's life.

As a nineteenth century evangelist and writer, Mr. Drummond explores 1 Corinthians 13 as a deep thinker. I found myself re-reading and highlighting major portions of the book as his profound interpretations and applications were surprisingly relevant for believers today. He thoroughly examines the scripture and concludes rightly that "the greatest of these is love." Not a long book, but good for a devotional or deep study on love. Lots of light bulb moments for me.

In *The Greatest Thing in the World* Henry Drummond, a liberal Christian minister of the late 1800's, gives us a powerful essay on Paul's chapter on love, found in I Corinthians 13. The short essay is broken into three parts: The Contrast; The Analysis; and The Defense. The book is very short - it can probably be read in 20 minutes - but it's a 20 minutes that could change your life, and your outlook on Jesus's admonition that we love one another. I never fail to feel uplifted and inspired by Drummond's sermon on love. I recommend this book for all who are seeking to be better expressions of Love.

I had no idea it would move me as much as it did. I've read the 13th chapter of 1st Corinthians many times and love it. In fact, my wedding ring has the inscription of 1st Corinthians 13:13 inside it so as to remind me how love and marriage are intertwined. In reading this slim book, however, I was shown an even deeper understanding of the importance of love in everything and the necessity of not limiting it to just the familiar. We all deserve love. More importantly, we all need to show love. Read this book. Keep it on a shelf close to your bed as I do and read it just before falling asleep. It gives me good dreams. I hope it does the same for you.

It is easy to say you are a Christian, but would people know you were a Christian if you didn't tell them? Henry Drummond (1851-1897) draws out the profoundly deep meaning of I Corinthians 13. He explains how if we love we will automatically be keeping God's commandments.

By reading "The Greatest Thing in the World" you will fully understand what truly bring happiness into your life. I really enjoyed reading this message of hope. I intend on buying this book for all my Christian friends.

This is a wonderful exposition on chapter 13 of 1st Corinthians. One like I have never heard. This man most have had quite an experience to be able to speak this way. It really affected me and made me realize that I had fallen very short of understanding these scriptures.
