Sergius Bulgakov (1871-1944) is widely regarded as the twentieth century's leading Orthodox theologian. He dwells largely on the existential themes of each festival, evoking the inner response of the believer. This is complemented by reflections on the depth of theological meaning found in the works of Christ and the Holy Spirit. At times he deploys simple symbolic explanations, at others technical Trinitarian expositions.

In Churchly Joy Sergius Bulgakov takes readers through the joyous mysteries of the church year as reflected in the Orthodox Church's major feasts, including celebrations of the Annunciation, the Birth of Christ, the Epiphany, the Transfiguration, the Triumphal Entry, Easter, and more. Churchly Joy reflects Bulgakov's transcendent vision for the church and will provide spiritual growth and edification for all Christians.

Translated by Boris Jakim -There are two worlds for the Christian and two lives in them: one of these lives belongs to this world of sorrow and suffering, while the other is lived in a hidden manner in the Kingdom of God, in the joyful city of heaven.

Translated by Boris Jakim “There are two worlds for the Christian and two lives in them: one of these lives belongs to this world of sorrow and suffering, while the other is lived in a hidden manner in the Kingdom of God, in the joyful city of heaven. All of the events, both of the Gospel and of the Church, which are celebrated at different times of the Church Year are not only remembered but are also accomplished in us, insofar as our souls touch this heavenly world. These events become for us a higher reality, a source of unceasing celebration, of perfect joy.” -- Sergius Bulgakov (from preface) This distinctive book contains spiritual orations and edifying discourses rooted in the Orthodox tradition. Beautifully and lovingly written, heart grabbing and compelling. The translator must be commended for an amazingly warm job. I love Father Sergius Bulgakov, may he dwell with the blessed! Life changing and eye opening. Glory to God! There is nothing unorthodox in this collection and nothing controversal. Please always remember that attacks on Bulgakov's other works came from a controversal period of history between the Moscow church and an expatriot who was head of an orthodox seminary and had read Saint Gregory Palamas with clear comprehension. Dear Father Bulgakov was cleared of any charges of heresy. After more than 50 years his works are only recently being available. Im not a theologion, but like Forest Gump i can say "i know what LOVE is" and add that Fr Bulgakov is sureky writing with and about real LOVE.

Sergius Bulgakov is best known for producing a series of controversial volumes on Trinitarian theology. These are characterised by both an elaborate deployment of speculative theological formulations and intense spiritual passion. In this volume of orations he writes in a more straightforward manner, but still with his trademark 'mystical lyricism', as one commenter has described his style.

This is complemented by reflections on the depth of theological meaning found in the works of Christ and the Holy Spirit. At times he deploys simple symbolic explanations, at others technical Trinitarian expositions. The orations are tied together by Bulgakov's profound vision of the transfiguration of creation by the Triune God, as proclaimed and lived by the Church.

This would be a helpful book for preachers looking for inspiration for their sermons on special days of the church calendar, or for anyone who desires a deeper devotional understanding of the inner meaning of the New Testament narrative.
