Her first book Ordinary Me: From Survival to Success shows readers how to triumph over tremendous adversity. Throughout this difficult period Marshall found refuge in her academic work and never lost the desire to fight. Marshall was born in Detroit, MI and spent much of her early years being raised by her mother. However, the relationship was far from perfect. Under the care of her mother Marshall was physically and verbally abused. At the age of 16, Marshall faced life on the streets after running away from a foster home. She was homeless for a few months until moving in with her cousin and completing her high school education.

WOW!!!! When I purchased the book I thought it was going to be good but as I started reading, it became GREAT! I could barely put it down. Since I am a foster parent I had many emotions reading this book. It made me look at things from the child's eyes in a way I hadn't done in the past. There were a few times when I just put the book down and wept. I commend you for your strength, beliefs, and determination! The mind is a powerful thing and so all can witness by reading this book that power comes from within!
I am going to recommend this book to my agency as well as my county's social services office. This should be a mandatory reading for all agencies that work with children, especially children awarded to the state.

Congratulations to Ms. Marshal for her personal divulgence. This book is a shining example of why so much more attention has to be paid to our foster care system and the policies and processes currently in place. Ms. Marshal should be commended for her ability to bravely place her experiences on the line for the public to see. And every woman and man who thinks they can't do it "seems to far to achieve that goal"..... should read this.... I started reading this awesome story of a young woman finding her way and I couldn't put it down. I finished it in one afternoon. Ms. Marshal is so candid throughout this story, it gives us all hope that regardless of your background, anything is possible.

This book was truly inspiring in knowing that this author could endure such a trying period in her life, and still come out on top. The odd's were definitely against her. I recommend this book for everyone to read, especially for teen aged girls. I don't have much time to read, but this book truly kept me focused, wanting to finish. It was an easy read.

Your book is a sweet blend of pain, redemption, forgiveness, acceptance, and empowerment. My daughter and son both loved reading it and we are all waiting for the next one!!
