With a Measure of Grace book. Spalding and Castle began with the goal to meld their ideas of place-based, seasonally appropriate cuisine, right livelihood, environmental ethics and social and community responsibility into a restaurant they would operate with compassion, generosity, loving kindness and grace. They were unaware at the time that given the unusual circumstances of their venture, this plan would be the restaurant's only chance of survival.

With a Measure of Grace begins with a wonderful foreword by Terry . All of it gorgeously illustrated by Santa Fe-based photographer Eric Swanson.

With a Measure of Grace begins with a wonderful foreword by Terry Tempest Williams, where she recounts early visits to the very conservative village of Boulder, followed by more recent trips there and her discovery of Boulder Mountain Lodge and Hell’s Backbone Grill. Williams writes this about the restaurant: The Buddha says breathing is a ‘quivering intake of life. At Hell’s Backbone Grill, so is eating. Spalding and Castle are great at writing lovingly about something as simple as sea salt. And there’s even a Top-Twentyish Playlist of tunes that help set Hell’s Backbone’s moods.

Located in the heart of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Boulder, Utah, was the last town in the nation to receive year-round mail by automobile. Today it has no stoplight, cell phone service, ATM, grocery store or medical facilities. But it has Zagat-rated Hell's Backbone Grill, which despite all odds, has won the acclaim of national and international media. Sixtyfive favorite recipes accompany charming anecdotes, old-fashioned rural wisdom and introductions to captivating local characters, making With a Measure of Grace a warm and earthy, unforgettable read.

This is not only a wonderful cookbook, but its essays are thoughtful and intriguing. The book itself seduces readers to visit one of America's greatest restaurants, at a site hidden away in secluded Boulder, Utah, where you can stay at this tranquil Inn and eat exquisite meals, taking local excursions to an amazing native American museum in Boulder, as well as hiking the incredible surroundings. The drive there from Escalante is, without question, the most amazing road in the United States, skipping on the bluffs and precipices of canyons --a legacy of the WPA.

You have to consider this as an experiential cookbook, not just page after page of recipes with a long intro. It's a good read AND the recipes are original. I've actually eaten at the restaurant in Boulder, UT., and having read and sampled the cookbook a year or two before that, I really enjoyed the food AND the work that goes into their food. They supposedly have another cookbook coming out in Spring of 2016.

Loved the book so much, my husband and I drove to Boulder, UT for a long weekend and ate at Hell's Backbone Grill 4 times! The book is a wonderful story of how the restaurant came to be and includes many fabulous recipes for us to try. I've pre-ordered the next book, can't wait for it to come out. Really hope they include the recipe for Braised Beef that we had in the restaurant. It was AMAZING!

Such a lovely cookbook! Filled with delicious recipes, beautiful photographs and heartfelt stories about restaurant life in a small Utah town and how her Buddhist faith weaves through all aspects of her life. I really hope to someday get to Hell's Backbone Grill.

Love it. Love stories and pictures about the bakers and the place.
My copy was also autographed by the authors. (I made a trip to eat at the Devil's Backbone - dinner was beyond excellent. It is a fantastic drive, but don't do it at night.)
