I was only recently introduced to SLT. I absolutely love their cookbooks and their store which I visited when I was in NYC. My first cookbook was their baking book, which is fabulous, so I decided to try this one out as well. I didn't realize that the book would be so tiny, but it's still a great book. The recipes I've made have all been very good. Some do require a bit more work than I'd like, but the results are very good so I usually feel that they end up being worth the time and effort spent.

One of the things I like most about SLT and Williams-Sonoma cookbooks is that they always have loads of picures - almost one picture for every recipe. While this may be trivial to some, I find myself most often using cookbooks that have pictures in them since they're what inspire me to actually make the recipe. I have a few Bon Appetit and Cook's Illiustrated cookbooks, but I find that I don't use them as often as I thought I would because there aren't many pictures. Their recipes are very very good, but with Bon App and CI I have to read through the entire recipe before I decide whether or not I want to make it. With SLT and WS, I take one look at the picture and say, "this looks fantastic. I'm making it!" I really wish SLT would come out with more cookbooks.

I typically avoid stocking up on cookbooks and tend to borrow from the library or visit websites such as WS and SLT for recipes to avoid having shelves of dust collectors, but the SLT and WS cookbooks are so lovely and useful that I can't seem to stop ordering them even though I can get most recipes for free online.

But comforting and heartwarming! Each recipe I have tried seems to require a trip to the grocery store or specialty store. However, if you are not obsessing over your cholesterol and you are missing full-flavored foods, this is a great little book! (It relies a lot on whole milk, creams and butter.) Chocaholics will love the dessert section where chocolate is an ingredient in almost everything, including bread pudding. I am eager to try the apple pie recipe where cream cheese is an ingredient of the crust. Then there is old-fashioned mac-and-cheese to remind you of why you liked it so much in the first place. I am always looking for really good soups and stews and I was not disappointed here. It contains only half a hundred recipes, but I have found more tasty and useful ones here than in many much larger cookbooks.

This is a delightful little cookbook with lots of beautiful photos but best of all, tasty recipes featuring real comfort food. This is not a "health food" cookbook in that you won't find low-fat, sugar-free recipes. What you will find are recipes that use real ingredients like eggs, cheese, milk, and butter. Of course, one is always free to substitute low-whatever ingredients, but I sometimes wonder if substitutions make us end up eating more in an attempt to get the same level of satisfaction that a smaller amount of the real stuff would give. (I'm just saying.)

I tried the corn tortillas casserole which was delicious and I look forward to trying more from this book such as sour cream coffee cake, crispy fried chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, yukon gold and sweet potato gratin, and chocolate chunk bread pudding. Recipe categories include sweet breads, savory breads; soups, stews and sandwiches; main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.

Most of the recipes call for ingredients that can be found at larger grocery stores and substitutions are suggested for some specialty ingredients, such as monterey jack cheese if queso Chihuahua isn't available.

The beauty of this book makes it a great gift for any cook and the recipes are easy enough for beginners as well as more experienced cooks.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.
Sur La Table tells us in Simple Comforts that comfort food is "the kind of food that goes right to your soul and gives you a bit of tasty refuge from the stresses of the day." I certainly agree with that! Smells and tastes can easily bring back childhood memories for me and in Simple Comforts many of my favorite classic recipes are upgraded to give them a bit of a new twist. My favorite is the Cinnamon Streusel Sour Cream Coffee Cake, with its moist crumb and sweet spices and my husband loves the Luxuriously Retro Beef Stroganoff with Buttered Noodles. Macaroni and cheese is overflowing with baked cheesy, yummy goodness when cooked in a cast iron pan. And, of course, there are desserts, cookies, brownies, pudding and more. Every single recipe in Simple Comforts had me oohing and ahhing, bringing back wonderful memories and motivating me to get in the kitchen and cook up some comfort.
