Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook - Zoe Coulson (1980, Hardcover).

Good House keeping Cook Book. I bought this for my Granddaughter who wants to learn to cook. This is the first cookbook I ever used. Charmingly old-fashioned, it has the best h recipe I've ever tried and is singularly responsible for my obsession with baking. It is a wonderful book, fully illustrated, and step by step details. brij2cros, October 10, 2006.

I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift from my grandfather (really my mum, buying this and some wooden spoons and measuring spoons in my grandfather's name) the year I was 6. It was regular after-school-snack reading material for, oh, about the next 10 years. The first pages started falling out from use when I was 10, and I've duct-taped it together twice. It's got just about every recipe you could want, whether you're 6 or 66. Eclairs, roast chicken, grilled cheese, souffle, ice cream, chocolate cream pie, even cucumber salads: it runs the *entire* gamut. The recipes nearly all have easy to follow, step by step directions, and most have illustrations not just for the finished product but also for many of the steps. There are menus, arrangements, guides to herbs/cheeses/meats/pairings/etc, ideas for types of parties.... Honestly, if you only buy one cookbook, buy this one.

I bought a second copy of the same edition recently and spent a nice couple of hours transferring my notes, page by page (retiring the original). I plan to keep using this copy until it wears out, too.

I absolutely love this cookbook! This is the cookbook that my mother used while i was growing up and has been her go to cookbook for 30+ years. This is an amazing cookbook for beginning and experienced cooks. Every single recipe in the cookbook has a color picture, which is amazing. I love being able to see what the food is supposed to look like before I try to make the recipe.

Each section of the cookbook has a description on everything that you need to know for that recipe. For instance, in the fish section, it introduces fish and then teaches you how to pick the best fish at the market, how to skin it, etc. and then the different methods to cook the fish (fry, bake, etc.), and then if you continue, all of the recipes for fish are listed later. This provides an excellent foundation for cooking in general so that you can eventually learn to make your own recipes. Every section of the cookbook is alphabetized so that you can quickly and easily find the food type in the book.

This is the best overall cookbook that I've ever seen and I would highly recommend that this be a staple in every cooks kitchen.

Every kitchen should have one of these books. It has simple pictures so that you are assured you are doing it right. It shows you the classic way of cooking things. This is where standards for cooking come from. If you're looking for a basic book to learn how to cook basic things, this is for you. If you're looking for wild zany fresh takes on classic recipes, this book is not for you, unless you want to know the basics and then decide to change up the recipe yourself. People on a diet beware! This book does not know the meaning of "too much butter." It does not cater to vegans, vegetarians, gluten free, fat free, or low calorie. That's not to say that some recipes aren't already naturally like that. This book also shows you classic ways for decorating and assembling the dishes for aesthetically pleasing presentations. It also shows you measurement conversions. I grew up with this book, and then I moved away from home and found a copy of it here on Amazon. Then, it was stolen by the movers along with a bunch of other things, so I bought the book again. Very important book!

This is a great cookbook for the beginning and wanting to become serious cook. It begins with 40 or so pages of pictures of completed recipes from the book. Each picture names the dish, gives the page # for the recipe, and -most importantly- how long this dish takes to prepare i.e. "Begin 2 hours ahead" . Each section(Fish, Poultry, Meat, Breads and so forth) begins with general information on prep, and then give recipes which can actually be easily followed, and which include illustrations of any tricky parts. You will succeed with this book. There is also a lot of information on choosing knives and cookware, defining cooking terms (baste, poach, etc), using herbs and describung their flavors, calorie counts, food storage life. Amazing. This is the onlu cookbook you will need.

Someone bought this cookbook for me as a gift for my bridal shower thirty-three years ago. I have used it so much that it has all but fallen apart. There are some awesome recipes and great guidelines for cooking just about everything here. The book arrived in perfect condition - it looks as brand new as my original version. Now I have another thirty years of great cooking!

The 1980 edition is the best.

I purchased a used copy at a 2nd hand bookstore for my parents and suggested they bring it to their summer cottage as a great all-around cookbook and reference book. That summer I went to the cottage and we had a couple of days of rain so I did some reading and then picked up this cookbook. I found it very informative, filled with great recipes, the kind that I would make, not the kind that just look good in a cookbook. Well I spent the second rainy day cooking and everyone loved the food. I made two lemon meringue pies and they were awesome, just like my aunt used to make years ago. I also made the pizza dough for home-made all dressed pizza, the oatmeal cookies, the italian bread and the apple pie. The book is 30 years old and is still fabulous.

When I got back home I wanted to buy myself a copy so I researched the Amazon site and read reviews comparing the 1980 edition to newer updated editions and I was struck by the fact that there are only 5 star reviews and that many people state that the 1980 edition is better than the newer versions. I went to a mega chain bookstore and checked out the newer updated versions and most of the recipes had been changed and my lemon merigue pie was not there - no brainer, I ordered several used copies through Amazon; one for me and a few as gifts.
