Going back in time in a cook book , pretending it is Downton Abby is interesting and being " upstairs " is preferable .
With that many courses , people wouldn't have been as skinny as Downtons inhabitants unless a lot of it ended up
as food for the pigs after being tasted . The recipes are simple and some are time consuming like making stock
for soups and souces and cooling things without refrigeration. An interesting read with usable recipes .

For someone like me, this book is loads of fun. I thoroughly enjoy sitting down and reading a cookbook as if it were a novel. Each cookbook can give me insight into the culture, historical era, and social norms of the era from which the recipes come. This book is a real treasure chest of how people lived, and what they ate in my grandparents' time, and my parents' childhood.

This was for a gift to a good friend, but first I hard to read it. The recipes are strange but the reading is good. I think you will like it.

Margaret Powell writes so well - I have never read a cook book cover to cover until this one - she gives insight into the cooking tradition of her time, as well as provide interesting recipes (I tried the soup stock and it worked wonderfully) - can't wait to make the Yorkshire pudding and the treacle tart - some recipes may not be applicable to our age - nonetheless it is a great read - historically and otherwise!

Wow! I love all the discussions about the process of cooking back then. Not really planning to use the recipes. Some of the measurements (such as a dessert spoonful) are a mystery to me.

I really hate to cook, bot this book makes me want to get into the kitchen and challenge myself. The recipes are mostly doable, although some belong in another time and place and are just fun to read. They are also fun to read if you are into Downton Abbey,etc. Read and enjoy!
