Nila Banton Smith's work stands alone as an historical account of reading instruction in this great country of ours. So many ideas that came of research in the colonial period still hold true today. A must read for reading specialist and professional the world over interested in instructing students to read, this work by far will exceed your expectation on way to improve and develop lifelong readers among all.

As required text books go, this wasn't too bad. The author overused citations and they were printed in smaller type that was challenging to read. The subject matter was fairly interesting but the citations were often distracting rather than enhancing.
