In Kentucky, we are teaching the Common Core Math Standards as of last school year. I was hoping that this would be a good resource for hands on learning to the new standards. Most of this contains web sites for the students to use. I guess that would be great if there were enough computers available in your classroom or you had access to a lab whenever you wanted. I have bought several books from these authors based on my past experience. Big Mistake! I have not opened this book since the day it was delivered. I was looking for hands on classroom activites not computer activities. If computers are not a problem for your classroom, this might be worth your money but for me it was a waste.

Dont waste your money. The authors seem to think that "hands on" means accessing a website, reading about the skill, and then reporting what you read. Yuck!

I am using this in my 8th grade math class (spring 2017) as differentiated instruction. I use it in addition to our district-mandated curriculum. I LOVE the activities! Each standard has 1-2 activities. For a few standards there are activities that can only be done with technology, but the majority do not require access to one-to-one tech. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to your classroom curriculum!

I purchased this book recently since I'd been killing my 7th grade students with worksheets. The book provides a nice table of contents and also an index so you can easily find something related to what you're going to teach. In my state we haven't made the full switch to Common core yet so I'm browsing the book by topics.

So far I have used 2 activities from this book (both slightly modified) and I can't wait to use more. One was on ordering rational numbers and the other on tax and discounts. The kids LOVED the activities we have done. The activities have shown me things about my students that I wouldn't have known otherwise. For example, my students (7th grade) don't know how to read a ruler, they also didn't know words such as "quantity" and "sale price."

The book really seems to promote cooperative learning, kids learning from kids, and also pushing them to higher order thinking skills by making them present their work to the class. My students haven't had much of an opportunity to "explain" any of their thinking in any of their classes so I'm having to coach them through a lot of it. This is a great way to start building those skills because if they can explain the math, then they should be able to retain it better.

So back to the book: while it isn't the "solve all your planning problems" type of book, it gives you some incredible insight as to the kinds of activities that the kids really should be doing to make math fun and show them the relevancy in their own lives.

Assist teachers in their transition into Common Core curriculum. All support materials appreciated as we embark on this new journey into advanced rigor on all classrooms.
I have never been inclined to write a review for a product on Amazon, but I just had to write one for this book. It has great ideas for all of the Common Core Standards. The games/lessons are so simple but still teach the concept. I teach middle school math and I am so excited to use these lessons in my classroom. The book is easy to understand and has everything you need to prep the lesson. I highly recommend this book to any teacher looking to supplement their classroom with great hands-on activities.
