The New American Cursive series is an easy-to-follow resource for teaching beginning cursive. It presents simplified letter forms, using multi-sensory methods to aid in the learning of motor skills necessary to write well. Developed by Iris Hatfield, with over 35 years of experience in the handwriting field, the book improves the process of teaching handwriting and allows students to start at a younger age. NAC's simplified strokes and letter forms allow first grade students to truly master beautiful cursive. Every child can master cursive in the first grade and many of the first graders who have used this program write better than typical third graders. Learning cursive early ensures that they are not slowed down or frustrated in the upper grades when they are focusing on other subjects such as grammar and composition.

This workbook is a lifesaver! We follow Montessori principles, but my 4yo daughter loves workbooks and needed a little help with her cursive handwriting. We had tried three other separate workbooks and all of them were loathed by her and me both for various reasons: too little trace work, too much trace work, difficult methods, etc. My final shot was this workbook, and I am so glad we tried it! The New American Cursive style is a really nice blend of italic print and traditional cursive. It is simple, clean, and easy to follow. This workbook has just the right amount of tracing and copy work. It shows the print version of the letters in addition to the cursive so the child learns to associate the two (which we have found to be extremely helpful in daily life!) but all the work is in cursive. We could honestly do without the meerkat character as the presence of such doesn't have any additional impact on the process or enjoyment, but it's cute. My daughter's favorite part is at the end of each lesson where it has a large space to draw or write or whatever she pleases. I initially wasn't fond of the book's order (it goes alphabetically, and each letter they practice both the lower case and capital letters), but at the end of each lesson the child is given a short page of trace work that is other letters so they can practice the pen-strokes and get a feel for what's to come. Ive already bought the next workbook in this series so we have it when she finishes the first.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and was taught cursive at her school before I started home schooling. Since she started later than the rest of the kids, her handwriting was not up to par so I bought this program hoping to correct and improve her writing style. I first bought the Cursive II but after beginning it I realized that although she knows cursive, in order to use this style we needed to go backwards and so I bought the Cursive I.

My 5 year old son and my 3rd grade daughter are both using this book now and I love it! They love it!!! Lessons are simple and easy to do. I used another program before from OLVS and their workbook was harder for beginners, at least for my 5 year old. He actually enjoys handwriting now and has picked it up super fast. I think it has to do with the shorter lessons. For my daughter I have her practice first in the book, then go to separate paper and re-write it and I've seen great improvement.

We will continue on to the New American Cursive II book afterwards because I also liked the workbook, my daughter just wasn't ready for it yet at the time.

Excellent book for beginners. I am using it for my 8 year old and 6 year old at the same time. Great Series. I'm going to get "Teach yourself cursive" for my 15 year old.

Easy to use for my 4th/5th grader over the summer. Her cursive is dramatically improving. Not too much work in each lesson, so she doesn't get frustrated, nor does her hand get tired. Will order again when my first grader is ready!

Love this program.

My daughter is 6 and she loves the program. It has helped her to feel like a big girl learning cursive this early. She has had a little bit of a struggle with print. This has really helped her confidence.

My reluctant printer is enjoying this easy cursive with fewer loops and hoops. I think when he completes the program, he will be writing faster and easier period, which I hope will make writing in general more bearable!
It's a good a very well thought-through program. However, for the money, it's just okay. I like the systematization and the explanation of the strokes better in the Cursive Writing for Right- & Left- Handed Kids, Grades 3 - 7: An Effective Developmental Approach for All Children by Sherrill B. Flora M.S., it works for my 6 year old better.
