The Daleks are trying to destroy the Earth and the Doctor has to stop them. There's a reason why the traditional Dalek story is so often done. After all these years it works. It is bolstered by great performances from the leads. Leela is as feisty and brave as ever and the Doctor has some decent lines.

Energy of The Daleks was apparently the first 4th Doctor Adventure to be recorded, but it came out fourth. I think it shows that it's the first.

Leela was one of the Doctor Who companions to never square off the the Doctor's most dreaded enemies, the Daleks. Well, at least until now. Big Finish tries to make up for this "error" for the fourth Doctor era with the first story recorded (the extras talk in great deal about it) for the new fourth Doctor line. And it's pretty much a hit or miss affair. Energy of The Daleks was apparently the first 4th Doctor Adventure to be recorded, but it came out fourth.

Some of the best and most inventive Dalek stories have been told by Big Finish Audio with stories like Brotherhood of the Daleks, Blood of the Daleks, and Patient Zero. This story is very traditional and oddly enough, it's by design. Tom Baker only faced the Daleks twice in his seven season TV as the Doctor and both of these were very different Dalek stories. Energy of the Daleks is the type of story that Terry Nation sold each season for Jon Pertwee's Doctor from Season 9-11. The Daleks are trying to destroy the Earth and the Doctor has to stop them. Nothing really special about the plot or the method, just Doctor v. Daleks.

Of course, this isn't to say the story doesn't work. There's a reason why the traditional Dalek story is so often done. After all these years it works. It is bolstered by great performances from the leads. Leela is as feisty and brave as ever and the Doctor has some decent lines. This story is also worth noting for bringing Leela and the Daleks together for the first time and it's a good meeting. With a lesser TARDIS crew, this would be a dull story but Jameson and Baker make it a decent if not outstanding listen.

Coming into this audiodrama, I was a bit concerned. Apparently this was the first of the Fourth Doctor Adventures to be recorded, and I had felt that the voice acting on "Destination Nerva" was spotty at times. Would Baker and Jameson sound even more out of synch in this production? Also, I wasn't sure that the Daleks would work well on audio, both in terms of the somewhat grating speech patterns and the typical scope of their schemes.

Oddly, the voice acting is perfectly fine, on par with the previous two productions. While this leaves me a bit puzzled as to what happened with the first audiodrama that was released, since it has been the weakest entry by far, it does assure me that the bulk of the material will meet a higher standard.

It helps that this story never slows down, so there's not a lot of time for the mind to wander. In many ways, this feels like a cross between "Power of the Daleks" and "The Dalek Invasion of Earth". Like the former, it is more about the Daleks manipulating humans to achieve their goals of extermination and victory, and like the latter, it involves direct robotic control of human beings. It may sound like it's a bit derivative, but it fits remarkably well within that context.

The downside is that it doesn't have quite the same grandeur of the latter-day Dalek epics, and certainly doesn't compare to the scale of many of the massive (and often overwrought) Dalek invasions of the Russell T. Davies era. Also, the "science" behind the Dalek scheme is downright nutty. In a sense, both of these problems render the story perfect for the era and tone that the writer is trying to invoke, but it also leaves the story feeling a bit flimsy.

Even so, there's always something special about a Dalek story, as if their presence makes you want to perk up and pay attention. The approach of the production itself also seems to suggest that everyone involved saw this as a tentpole story, because of the "guest villains", and perhaps that is why it doesn't quite meet expectation. But it doesn't miss by much, and if the solution to the problem is more technobabble than cleverness, it's certainly not the first time!
