I was pleasantly surprised with the depth of characters and world building this book provided. I guess when I hear mythical gods, I wonder how realistic any parts of the writing can be. I found it to be very believable and I think the story was written so well that the world building occurred without you even realizing it. That seems to be difficult for a lot of writers because I have read a lot of books where too much time is spent explaining the setting and you either lose out on character building or it seems so obvious you never get lost in the story.

The storyline between the lead character and her love interest is based on a prior history and because of that there is an automatic depth to the romance that wouldn't have occurred otherwise. It was a clever route to take because the story would have been too action packed for two people to have formed such a tight bond so quickly. I enjoyed the entire book but especially loved the ending. I am happily awaiting the follow up to this great new book!

Right up front, I will caveat this review: I've never been into urban fantasy or the paranormal and never planned to get into it. My tastes, while varied, tend to run more towards spy novels, murder mysteries, techno thrillers a la Tom Clancy, etc. About the only books I've ever embraced in the fantasy genre are The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy (along with 150 million others). So why would I buy a modern urban fantasy from a little-known author? One half of the Sable Grace writing team, Heather Waters, has been a neighbor and friend for several years. Heather and her husband and two children are wonderful, warm, thoughtful people whom it is a privilege to know. Heather graciously presented my wife with a signed copy of "Bedeviled" (the second of three planned books in the Dark Breed series) even though we had never read the first. So I figured that as a neighbor and friend, I owed it to Heather to buy her first book "Ascension" and at least attempt to read it.

I did better than make an attempt. I completed the book in two days. While I still can't claim to be a convert to a genre filled with vamps, lychens, witches, mystics, etc., I did learn a simple but powerful lesson: a good story is a good story regardless of genre. "Ascension" is well-written, action-packed, and easy to read. The characters are interesting and mostly well-developed. The urban fantasy slant worked for me primarily because the story takes place in St. Augustine, Florida, a nearby town that I know well.

Having read a few other books by new or lesser-known authors, I expected to see numerous grammatical and spelling issues. "Ascension"; however, was at least as well-edited as most mainstream books. The quality of the editing, the plot, the character development and the action far surpassed my expectations.

The highest compliment I can pay is this: having completed "Ascension", I can't wait to begin reading "Bedeviled". I will start today.

The urban fantasy genre has really boomed during the past ten years. This writing duo has created their fantasy world by mixing the rather standard, vampires, werewolves, witches and even zombies (though here they are Vampyres, Lychen, Witches and Leeches) with a twist on Greek mythology. This definitely made for a unique premise - though not rooted solidly enough in traditional Greek mythology to be completely convincing. The characters did not really stand out, and while the plot was interesting enough, there were never any genuinely thrilling moments. The romance didn't feel authentically paced, and wasn't very captivating. The largest hindrance to enjoying this book, however, was entirely due to the constant and quite abrupt shifts in point-of-view.

For starters, I liked the plot, the action, the characters even. I like strong female leads and Kyana delivered. Her male counterpart was a little weak but I suppose it was necessary so he didn't overshadow her. I like the back story, the easy friendships, the world the author(s) created - Above and Below. Maybe you're wondering why only three stars? I do feel it was well written with great banter between characters too; BUT and of course there's a but, the romance between the leads was weak and not only that, everything woven throughout the story left me unfulfilled. It's hard to explain. When I'm reading a story and I can put the book down easily and pick up another one, then that's a tell-tale that I'm not really into it. Again the plot is excellent but there's just something missing. I've read books like by L Ione and J Frank and T Dawn and G Showalter that kept my mind reeling during and after I finished but even though the way this story ended (cliffhanger), I don't care to know what's next for Kyana. Not on my list of "Must Reads".
