Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Quinn Fawcett, Bill Fawcett. A light hearted fantasy adventure, A Baroque Fable is a novel I would recommend to any lover of humorous fantasy, silly songs, bored royalty, fairy tales, love, maidens turned dragon, or crompets. Locadio's Apprentice. Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Quinn Fawcett, Bill Fawcett. It may not be a literary masterpiece to be studied by captive students for centuries to come, but it is a highly entertaining tale well worth the read.

Accompanied by his bored sister, Princess Felicia, Prince Andre of a Alabaster-on-Gelasta embarks on his first dragon hunt, but his intended quarry is not really a dragon, but rather a serving girl enchanted by her employer, Alfreida the witch

This book is a delightful romp through the land Once Upon a Time. There's a witch, and a dragon, and a prince and a princess, a king and queen, a sorcerer and an astrologer, an evil ruler and his Chumley, a spy and a crumpet baker; and not a one of them is anything like what you might expect. Their stories intertwine in a plot more than a little remniscent of one of Shakespeare's early comedies, complete with slapstick (well, a little) and mistaken identities (a few, anyway).

The characters lack the dreary realism too many writers of fairy-stories try to impart these days, and instead are (slightly wonky) caricatures of something other, as I said than what you might expect.

Oh. And they sing occasionally. There's even music to the songs in the back of the book. Indeed, it apparently started life as a musical, and Yarbro made a book of it, for which I am truly pleased.

It's out of print, but available, and there's a Kindle edition; so you can get it one way or another.

Do.

This is a strange little story - part fairy tale, part satire, part fantasy spoof. The beginning was excellent, and the villain scary. But it quickly downgraded into odd yet boring story. The scary villain was dispatched with little ceremony or climax, the characters exhibited unrealistic changes and the ending was a bit meh. While Yarbro went on to write award-winning vampire books (pre-Twilight) this work is a stand-alone and one of her early works. Although I haven't read her other works, I would assume this isn't her best. But if you enjoy strange spoofish works, this one is for you.

I've loved this book since I first read it 22 years ago. It's silly, romantic (in fairy-tale fashion), and utterly delightful!
Poor Esmerelda is turned into a dragon by a wicked witch only to be hunted by Prince Andre who longs for adventure. This is complicated by the fact that Esmerelda falls in love with Andre at first sight.
Also, from the fact that Andre's over-protective mother cries when he gets a hair-cut, you can imagine how she reacts to his dragon hunting. And his father the king is more interested in his knitting.
His joined on his quest by his sister the Princess Felicia because she's bored by everything else and figures dragon hunting might be somewhat interesting, and an assistant baker.
Add to this the Evil Villian who enjoys taste-testing the various poisons his subjects keep trying to kill him with; Chumley, an extremely strong and extremely stupid minion used by the villian to 'dispose' of troublemakers, the fact that any of the characters are apt to burst into song at a moment's notice and the page Francis (or is it Frances?) and you have a light-hearted romp of a novel.
If you're looking for serious Tolkien-esque fantasy this is NOT the book you want. 'Baroque Fable' is charming, nonsensical fun.
