The pairing of the Doctor and Romana harks back to the most-watched period of Doctor Who, one that to a generation is the most loved and iconic and which broke the records for viewers of the show. The height of the Roman occupation. John Dorney's Wrath of the Iceni does things with Leela that I wish was in the old series. The Doctor takes Leela to Briton during the Roman occupation to increase her education. With the Fourth Doctor Adventures now hitting their stride, this audiodrama production manages to include a great deal of action without straying into the confusing territory of "Destination Nerva". The character of Boudica is vivid enough that the conflict with the Romans is sufficiently rendered to reinforce the psychological and emotional drama.

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures. The story is a particularly good one for Leela, who becomes fascinated with the warrior queen (once it's been done, you realise that Boudica is the most obvious historical character for her to meet); and we get some twists on the "you can't rewrite history" theme. The first time I listened to it I was doing the family supermarket shoopping, and it seemed to me that the character development for Leela was too abrupt; listening to it again, while changing trains on a long journey through France (which I guess meant I was less distracted) it seemed to work much better.

Classic Doctor Who produced masterfully. We appreciate the full cast audio format. A great listen when you absolutely must travel by car. For those times when your Tardis is in the repair shop, this audio book cd is a must have. We appreciate great classic things: good writing, good voice actors, good production quality, a strong clam shell case, physical copies on cd.

This Big Finish Doctor Who gives us something TV never did: A Fourth Doctor historical. As someone who isn't acquainted with First Century English History, I found this as a fascinating tale as the Doctor and Leela encounter Boudica as she leads a rebellion against the Romans, a rebellion Leela thinks she and the Doctor should join, in but this time the Doctor doesn't want to interfere, however Leela's determined to fight for Boudica anyway.

The Doctor has some great lines and Tom Baker delivers them brilliantly in a performance that oozes charm. Louise Jameson is great as Leela, who turns in a wonderful performance as she is attracted to Boudica's cause but begins to learn that there's a more sinister side to this warrior. The story also does a good job showing the challenge of time travel. Unlike some instances where other Doctors' decision not to meddle with history seems arbitrary such as the Doctor refusing to help in the St. Bartholomew's Eve massacre, The Doctor not wanting to help Boudica is founded on a more solid basis. Sometimes, a war is a clear case of good v. evil. More often it's a case of two sides battling where the choice is far harder and discretion dictates staying out of it.

Overall, some great performance particularly from the female members of the cast and a solid script by Dorney make this another winner.

With the Fourth Doctor Adventures now hitting their stride, this audiodrama production manages to include a great deal of action without straying into the confusing territory of "Destination Nerva". The character of Boudica is vivid enough that the conflict with the Romans is sufficiently rendered to reinforce the psychological and emotional drama. And being a fan of that era of history, this was definitely a treat.

One common weakness of this particular run of stories seems to be the first act. Like the previous story ("The Renaissance Man"), this tale begins rather abruptly. In particular, I thought that Leela took Boudica's side far too easily and quickly; similarly, she denounced the Doctor and his reservations with little or no hesitation. It's clearly intended to speed things along, so that Boudica's single-minded thirst for vengeance can reveal itself over a longer stretch of time, but it does little credit to Leela's character.

I'm also on the fence about how Leela was portrayed. While she is still a bit of a savage at this point in the Classic Doctor Who timeline, she had been displaying her innate intelligence and observational skills since the start. In this case, the writer seems to default to just the savage. I get the feeling that Chris Boucher wouldn't have Leela miss the obvious signs of Boudica's madness so easily, or for that matter, jump so completely into a situation without more information.

But as I said, I have a soft spot for this period in history, and it's actually quite interesting for Big Finish to produce what is, essentially, a historical in the vein of the First Doctor's era. The only science fiction trope is the typical time paradox debate, and even then, it's handled more as a reflection of Leela's lack of perspective on the big picture.
