I loved the opening chapter of this book, with Demon Xanth assuming corporeal form and entering Xanth on a bet, and looked forward to reading about his adventures as he coped with mortal limitations. But then the story turned to a Mundane family lost in Xanth, and my enthusiasm rapidly deflated. One of the reasons I enjoy Xanth is reading about characters with magical abilities. It’s part of the escapism. Reading about regular people encountering Xanth isn’t that interesting to me, especially when the characters lack any real personality and just seem to embody roles: Dad is concerned for the family, Mom doesn’t like the boys staring at topless females, and the boys’ eyes are bugging out at the scenery. The pets had more charisma. Demon Xanth is present, but in the background, not as a point-of-view character, and that’s a shame because the potential was there for a unique and intriguing perspective. Most of the book is devoted to the Mundanes. Not until the last chapter do we return to Xanth himself in an exquisitely poignant ending.

If I ever read this book again, it will be for the opening and closing chapters, not for the Mundane story

Once again I'm asked to review A Piers Anthony Xanth series book. As I have said before Piers Anthony is a master storyteller and has proved it once again with Yon Ill Wind. Mr. Anthony credits his fans for the Puns that he includes in all this series books. On occasion the germ of the story may come from one of his many fans. But it is his ability to weave the story line and make it fall in line with all the previous stories, along with all the puns that he inserts in just the right spot. This story is a fun read, and does keep you guessing right up till the end as to whether or not everything is going to turn out all right or not.
