This is a pure fantasy story rather than science fiction. Of course, it is true that the bulk of science fiction is more accurately categorized as science fantasy, which blithely ignores fundamental scientific principles. I do not always mind that, since I occasionally enjoy space opera, but I prefer that it be categorized as such. This is a fun, light-hearted story. One of the very best of its kind, in my opinion. The ending is sort of a twist, though consistent with the rest of the story. It involves a bard misplaced by circumstances among a tough crew of Viking-types. They are caught in a storm and force him ashore to fetch fire from an island they know to be inhabited by a man-eating troll.

When we lost Poul Anderson, we lost one of the finest authors of our time. Poul was truly and artist, he painted with words and the pictures live in the minds of his readers. The Valor of Cappen Varra is an excellent example of his work, that range from fantasy tales to full-on Science Fiction.

Poul Anderson was a great writer, and this story is a good example of that. If you haven't read any of his works, this is a good place to start. Better yet, he wrote a lot of books. None of the ones I've read were bad, either.
Nargas
one of Anderson;s better fantasy stories.

Well written short story.
Mr Anderson's prose brought the story to life.
Too bad the hero didn't get to know the king's daughter better ...

Great short story, I love Poul Anderson's imagery, it's hard not to feel like you're right there. I liked the ending, a little humorous.
This is one of Poul Anderson's lesser works. It is a pretty good short story and there is evidence in it of Poul's imagination, love for history and command of the language. However, it is only a short work, very convenient for reading on a train trip, and not one of his great pieces of fiction.
