by Robert Vardeman

Cenotaph Road, Book Two. Robert E. Vardeman. While he was far from accepting the cavalcade of sensory changes torturously twisting around him, it no longer frightened him. His mind calmed; he forged a plan.

Cenotaph Road, Book Two. Chapter one. Chapter two. Chapter three.

The Sorcerer's Skull book. With no explanation why or attempt to transition. Then, I Am Disgusted

The Sorcerer's Skull book. Then, I Am Disgusted. I read the first book. This book is the second part of the Cenotaph Road Series and I must admit I had fun reading it. It is written in an easy-going way and you are able to read it quite quickly. I could have read it in one go without much problem. More than the story, what I liked the best is Krek, the pessimistic tarantula and its relationship with the protagonist Lan.

Cenotaph Road - 02. No two travellers are likely to survive the journey until fall chill brings a killing of the insects’ food sources. Thick blankets of swirling fog surrounded his skull and hid its horrible visage from sight. Lan again existed alone in the limitlessness of limbo. Claybore! he called out, hands groping for the sorcerer’s skull. We must try. Allow me to prepare an escort for you, then.

No hint of the white fog remained. Perhaps it was love, perhaps only duty. But above all, he was responsible for their walking the Cenotaph Road using Claybore' s Kinetic Sphere

No hint of the white fog remained. They truly found another world along the Cenotaph Road, a substantial world, not one of indeterminate dimension. But above all, he was responsible for their walking the Cenotaph Road using Claybore' s Kinetic Sphere. And, in a lesser way, he had caused Inyx to become lost when he batted the Sphere from the sorcerer' s hand within the misty limbo he and Krek had just left. Hmmm," said the spider, rubbing two front legs together in thought, " your choice in females is improving. I am rather taken with Inyx also.

Lan Martak, Krek and Inyx are stuck in the white, cloudy abyss between worlds. Lan and Krek are helped out of the void to a new world, while Inyx remains trapped in the infinite fog. Lan and Krek are taken to the walled city of Melitarsus where they become pawns of the Sazerain, Nashira. Little does he know it, but Lan's sexual encounters with Ria are being viewed by Nashira and others as an aphrodisiac. Meanwhile, Krek is sent to the coliseum where he is used to battle other warriors who cannot even compare with Krek's fighting abilities. Both are held by Nashira's magic. After finally escaping, they join a group of religious fanatics that worship the Earth so much that they constantly roll in the dirt to be as close to their god as possible. Both parties have the same goal--to get to the top of Mount Tartanius. Lan wants to go there to retrieve the Kinetic Sphere while Ehznoll and his followers travel there for religious enlightenment. The Sorcerer's Skull is the second book in the Cenotaph Road series. This is a fantasy story about Lan Martak, his companion spider, Krek, and Inyx as they pursue the evil sorcerer Claybore. Lan is attempting to prevent the sorcerer from getting all of his body part back together, which would bring him back to full power.

This is the second in the excellent fantasy series "Cenotaph Road".

When we last our intrepid trio they had just ventured into the Void, the whiteness between worlds. They are disoriented and just at that moment they are attacked by Claybore, the floating skull wizard who has decided that they have become a bit too much of a bother. Claybore tries to kill Lan but can't--he has developed a suite of magics through exposure to the Resident of the Pit for some reason, and he's able to resist Claybore. In a rage he throws Inyx into the Void and leave Lan to his fate.

Of course Lan quickly escapes and finds himself and Krek in another world, one in which he discovers there's a magical tome that might contain the key to defeating Claybore's magics. He and Krek began climbing the mountain to reach this tome, and along the way Inyx is able to escape the Void and finds herself a part of a gang of rebels trying to bringing down Claybore. There are magical spells galore, and various attempts by Claybore to destroy Lan, and a band of mystics who seem to have a definite aversion to bathing. The conclusion is both satisfying and leaves you for more.

A fine second novel, and it came out so VERY quickly after the first (just a few months)--I like that. Get this book if you want a fast moving, action packed novel--you won't regret it. Vardeman has created a very special and detailed world and you'll love it.

More than the story, what I liked the best is Krek, the pessimistic tarantula and its relationship with the protagonist Lan. In my opinion, Krek gives the story the extra funny note that it needs and it will be the reason for me to keep reading this series. Sometimes he is depressed, sometimes he could care less about people, sometimes he is like a spoiled kid and sometimes he is outright ridiculous: it is hilarious.

I have to say that if you are looking to read some serious and complicated fantasy like “Dune”, this is not your book. This is the kind of book you read after reading “Dune”, where you don't want to think much and enjoy a quick, funny and nice story. It is what I call a “snack book”; it is easy to read, it is quick, it is funny and it leaves you satisfied, what more do you need for a snack?

Overall, I enjoyed it and I recommend it. It will not take you long to read it and you will laugh from the gigantic tarantula that one moment is ruthlessly killing enemies and the next it has taken an oath to never kill anything again.

I read the first book. It was better than I expected. I was going to rate it 5 stars, despite the multitude of spelling and grammar errors. And despite the fact that it ended badly, meaning abruptly. Not a cliff hanger, exactly, it just stopped in the middle of a storyline. So I immediately got this book to continue. I read the first three chapters and felt like throwing up. First of all, the story changes. Literally changes. With no explanation why or attempt to transition. Then, it just merrily dived in to things such as pedophilia and incest. Sure, the author is making the bad guy seem bad. But I have no desire whatsoever to read about pedophiles. None. Or orgies and voyeurism or murder induced orgasms. So if you are a sick b******, you might enjoy this. If not, don't waste your time.
