Bruce Sterling is an American author and one of the founders of the cyberpunk science fiction movement. He began writing in the 1970s; his first novel, Involution Ocean, about a whaling ship in an ocean of dust, is a science fictional pastiche of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

Bruce Sterling is an American author and one of the founders of the cyberpunk science fiction movement. His other works, including his series of stories and a novel, Schismatrix, set in the Shaper/Mechanist universe, often deal with computer-based technologies and genetic engineering.

While not as good as Bruce Sterling's later work (Involution Ocean was published in 1977), it is an enjoyable take on Moby Dick, set in the far future on an ocean of dust

Involution Ocean is a far cry from the cyberpunk niche that Sterling later came to dominate (and arguably create). The setting is the far-flung world of Nullaqua. The world is defined by a single habitable crater, and that crater is filled with a heavy, perpetual mist of dust. Nullaqua is a sea-faring world, populated by a race of stoic, unimaginative sailors – all on an ocean of dust.

Bruce Sterling’s debut novel is a remarkable feat of world, provocative, and smart, featuring an unforgettable cast of colorful characters. If Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick unfolded on Frank Herbert’s Dune, the result might be something akin to Sterling’s extraordinary Involution Ocean. Fiction Sci-fi & Fantasy Aliens. One fee. Sadly none of the current reviews do this work justice. This short novel, is a work of genius, original and absolutely brilliant. Few writers have the kind of creativity that Sterling shows in his works, and that goes especially for this piece. Long out of print, this Kindle version is a blessing.

With all of the pseudo SF crap, we have been inundated with mindless, boring, unimaginative junk, especially under the heading of paranormal. Let's face it SF is not for the average reader, but those with genuine curiosity, and appreciation of serious "What If".

This story works on multiple levels. First of all it deals with an ocean made of sand, with unique creatures that inhabit this environment. It is also a nod to Moby Dick, as well as a heartbreaking tale of love.

It is a Masterpiece in every sense of the word.

This is the most unusual subject matter for a book I've read in a long time. Posits a world long settled by humans where the only habitable region on the whole planet is that surrounding an ocean of dust and dust dwelling native creatures. Or, up the wall of the crater with miles high walls, into which some additional habitation for humans have been built. Then go from there on a quest with a mad captain. There wasn't so much as a hint of fairy tale or sweetie-pie outs for the characters. Nice, tough, thoughtful with real surprising plot points. Give it a shot.

I really like this book. A very creative and strange re-telling of Melville's Moby Dick. I would not recommend it to most of the people that I know, as most of 'em did not experience some aspects of the '60s and early 70's and therefore would probably not understand much of it.

A remarkable first work by Sterling, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to read it. Although its not as technically ambitious as his later works, it's very well written and an engaging story. It seems he missed a career as a fantasist in the vein of Mieville...

Not hard science this one, but a good read for creation of well constructed alien planet and the human culture drawn to it.

Amazing that this was his first novel! Pre-Cyberpunk epic with shadows of the genre to come.
Better than most of the 'bargain' buys. Still a few annoying typos but a great read in any event. High recommendation.
