This is the second volume in Piers Anthony's "bio of a space tyrant" books, documenting the rise of Hope Hubris from penniless refugee to becoming the great tyrant of Jupiter. The style of these books is akin to the Master and Commander style nautical epics but in space. As in the previous book there are space pirates with an unquenchable lust for savagery, rape, and booty.

That was a mountain range in Earth’s North America, said to be fairly formidable; presumably the line-which would then have been a locomotive or railroad line in which cumbersome steam-driven vehicles were propelled along metal rails laid on the ground-required hand labor for its initial establishment.

for the interests of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and scattered lesser powers. A good deal of interplanetary spying went on there, and several major battles of the Second System War had occurred there. These days the planetary spheres of influence overlapped in the Belt with uneasy tolerance. The greatest officially unrecognized complication in the Belt was the rampant piracy.

A man becomes adult as he 'comes to terms' with a culture that holds his heritage to be disposable, demeaned, and leaving him to forge a space in life that stands in opposition (live or die). While utilizing the resources (physical and emotional) at his disposal,he proceeds to organize a team to wreak havoc on those aspects of the culture he holds responsible. He keeps a detailed journal of his experiences and exploits, hardly recognizing the larger changes he makes nor those he happens to avoid making. Preface and postscript by his granddaughter share the provenance of the journal, a cursory overview of the roles of the main protagonists, and provide a limited sense their historical significance.
I have read this series many times since high school. It is what got me hooked on reading. Easy and fast read.
I began reading this series when they originally came out in paperback. I made it to book 3 before life rudely got in the way. When
I finally purchased a Tablet and installed the Kindle app, the first books I went looking for was this series. No regrets. Read them.
Love them. Read them, again!
Much less heartache in this book as opposed to the first book, Refugee. Giving the plot away would be pointless. Hope Hubris still manages to do much with very little. If you didn't care much for the first book because of the tragedy, give this one a try.
I read for the first time in high school, and after so many years I still loved it. It brought back some old character friends. I think the best part of the book for me back in high school was that it showed me that sometimes there are choices in life that can make big differences in the future. Hope (main character) has to make several choices as grows, but thanks to understanding that those around him can help him he makes the right ones. I don't want to spoil the book, enjoy!
Not as good as the ffirst. I found the combat descriptions quite dry and am getting less interested in the character as in this book he does not have any real skills. Many times wishing that he would take a leading role rather than completely trust those around him.
This is a enjoyable book in the bio of the space tyrant series.

I look forward to reading the next book.
Good slow starter though
