Originally self-published by Tomine in 1991 as a series of mini-comics (which have later been collected in a single volume, 32 Stories), the series has been published by Drawn and Quarterly since 1995. Tomine's style and subject matter are restrained and realistic. Many are set in Northern California

About optic nerve In this long-awaited conclusion to Adrian Tomine's three-part epic, the story leaps across the country, taking place entirely in New York. All of protagonist Ben Tanaka's worst (and most amusing) traits are brought to the fore as his obsessive quest reaches a fever pitch. His best friend, Alice Kim, finds herself at an unexpected crossroads in her life, forcing her to make several life-altering decisions. Adrian Tomine is the critically acclaimed cartoonist of the comic book series Optic Nerve; the graphic novels 32 Stories, Sleepwalk and Summer Blonde; and the art book Scrapbook.

Adrian Tomine stubbornly continues to create old fashioned pamphlet style periodical comic books, long after everyone else has started only doing books or digital comics. He did similar "self cartoons" in Optic Nerve and in a Youtube Video about a speech at a bookstore about attending New Yorker Christmas Parties ~ both are excellent and reveal a little bit of the artist. The main story in Optic Nerve is a "Central Valley California" loser drama with a twist. I liked it better than the first two stories of Optic Nerve He displays subtle artistry in his lines of the face the woman character crying at the end.
