I had a lot of the Further Adventures of Indiana Jones comic books when I was growing up. I missed a few issues when I was collecting them, but I enjoyed the ones that I had as the stories were engaging and the artwork was typically very good (for 1980's standards). I gave away or sold most of my old comic books over the years but recently missed reading the Indiana Jones series. By accident, I stumbled upon the Indiana Jones Omnibus and purchased the 3 volumes that contained the mini series for the films and the Further Adventures (each film miniseries is contained in these volumes - Raiders is in Vol. 1, Temple of Doom in Vol. 2, and Last Crusade in Vol. 3). These books contain all of the issues of the Marvel series and are accurately reproduced. I would say that they are better than the original comics as the paper is much better than the old newsprint that they were originally published on. The covers for each issue is also contained within the books. I never read the Dark Horse issues so I cannot compare the stories between the series as some of the other reviewers have, but in my opinion the vast majority of the Marvel series were well written. I would say that if you were a fan of the series you can't go wrong with these books. If you were a fan of the films but never read any of the comics, this is a good place to start.

The greatest colaboration of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in film, Dark Horse re-interprets Marvel adaptation of the adventures of archeologist/adventurer Indiana Jones to life in print. This volume showcased the talents of DC/Marvel greats John Buscema, John Byrne, Dennis O'Neil, David Micheline, Kerry Gammil, Herb Trimpe, Walt Simonson, Archie Goodwin and Howard Chaykin. Top notch work, top notch book.

Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures were the first attempt (by Marvel Comics) to capitalize on the successful film franchise of the popular adventure hero with these fabulous four-color comics. The series ran from 1983 to 1986 with Marvel later doing an adaptation of The Last Crusade in 1989. There are 34 issues with 3 tie-in comics (adaptations of the first 3 films that run 3 issues a piece). Presented here in Vol. 1 are an adaptation of Raiders of the Lost Ark by Walt Simonson and the first 12 issues of the series. Things are kicked off in issue 1 by the always talented John Byrne (Fantastic Four, Superman etc.) , continued by wonderful scribe Denny O’neil (Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow etc.) and ending just a few issues into David Michelinie’s fabulous run (Michelinie being known mostly for his work on Iron Man and Spider-man). Of course there are a host of wonderful artists, co-plotters and editors to accompany these gentlemen.

The series takes its cues from how Indy is presented in Raiders of the Lost Ark, though the reader may have trouble picturing the movie version if the character saying and doing some of the things he does here. It also presents all of his now familiar supporting cast as well: Marcus Brody, Sallah and the lovely Marion Ravenwood in new continuities with new recurring villains in more globetrotting adventures. Plenty of pulp action to be had. This 366 page tome is definitely for fans of pulp fiction, adventure fiction and of course Indy fans!

(NOTE: For those who may be confused, these were originally Marvel Comics but have been reprinted by Dark Horse Books because Dark Horse had the publishing rights at the time).
