Geoff Jones and Gary Frank are the dynamic duo when it comes to Superman. The art by Frank is FANTASTIC. Combined with Jones writing, is like seying Christopher Reeve making his thing one more time.

Superman: Secret Origin was a six-issue monthly American comic book limited series published by DC Comics. The series was written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank, featuring the superhero Superman. The story featured the "definitive" origin of Superman for the modern, post-Infinite Crisis DC Universe continuity, starting with Clark Kent in his pre-teens as Superboy.

You can tell Geoff and Gary Frank really love that classic Reeve Superman just by the way he is drawn. The story is, not surprising, very well written. From the Legion, Lex to Metallo I enjoyed myself immensely while reading this book.

Superman: Secret Origin. Both Johns and the artist (Gary Frank) merge the Christopher Reeve Superman movies and the long history of comics together in a singular origin story for the character. Superman by Geoff Johns Secret Origen). This manages to do in 40 pages what it took Smallville (the TV show) 10 years to do. And it does it better. We see Clark grow from a young boy into a man, discovering his powers along the way (mostly during puberty when I ended up really enjoying this. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say: it's my favourite book by Geoff Johns.

Johns on Superman: Secret Origin.

Geoff Johns · Gary Frank. Dan DiDio decided to have Secret Origin run as its own mini-series, instead of having it play out within a Superman title as Johns had done previously with Green Lantern: Secret Origin. This was due to DiDio feeling that this method "gives them a little more time to work it, they don't have to struggle against the ongoing schedule, and it won't throw off the triangles on the covers which keep track of the story.

I am a really big fan of anything Geoff Johns writes and this is no exception. I am also a big fan of Superman and while I appreciate the more grounded and serious tone of Superman in the films and even the comics as of late, this take on Superman is still my favorite. Geoff does a great job of taking from the past Superman stories and the Christopher Reeve films while still making this feel fresh and exciting. You can tell Geoff and Gary Frank really love that classic Reeve Superman just by the way he is drawn. The story is, not surprising, very well written. From the Legion, Lex to Metallo I enjoyed myself immensely while reading this book. In my opinion this is my favorite and best Superman origin. It really makes you want this characterization back on the big screen one day soon.

Awesome tale with a while Christopher Reeve Superman vibe to it which was lighthearted yet had tons of action. Superman stories can be hard to read at times because of how powerful Clark Kent is, but this really highlighted in his character as well as the main cast. You also got a feeling of hope in this story and that is really what Superman is all about. Definitely recommended!

I don't think this is the definitive retelling of the Superman origin as it's been described but much more as a showcase for Gary Frank's Superman artwork. Geoff Johns certainly does a good job in telling a fast paced story with the usual cast of supporting characters but overall this really feel's like Gary Frank's baby. The great artwork dissolves any quibbles one might have with this story for those "non continuity" Superman readers yet in the end this story is all too familiar in the annals of Superman mythology. Naturally Geoff Johns keeps it entertaining enough as he know how to write these characters.

While a lot of the best Superman stories take place outside of continuity, this is my favorite reboot and revisiting of the origin. It pays wonderful tribute to the Reeve films and succeeds in every way the film Superman Returns does not. Leads into excellent comics such as Last Son and Brainiac.

This is yet another Superman origin story. If your don't want to read another one than this isn't really for you. This story hits all the basic beats and covers quite a lot of Superman's life. Geoff Johns seemed to want to get as much story and to bring together all kinds of Superman stories into one. We have things from Superman the Movie, Smallville, Birthright, and more I can't think of right now. I think the real stand out of this novel is the artwork, it is really great. Also Clark/ Superman in here feels like a version of Christopher Reeve's Superman, which is fun and awesome to see.

First of, Jones makes an UMBELIEVABLE work on writing Superman. It was like having a Superman story with all the ingredients Superman: The Movie had. I'm not saying that the book is based on the movie, but it have the "flavor" and it's given in such a sutil way that it made me smile every now and then.

The art by Frank is FANTASTIC. Combined with Jones writing, is like seying Christopher Reeve making his thing one more time. It was so unique!. An experience that I haven't had with no other artist.

What makes this story so damn good is how Geoff Jones makes Superman believable. His Superman is not doll nor out of fashion. He's as confused as you and I would be if we try to save the world alone. He have doubts. He's not perfect, but reachs a point where he knows what to do and what NOT to do.

Smallville portion was all about the parents and the true friends. The Legion of Superheroes portion was a breath of fresh air, and the Metropolis portion was a big bang bum!. Funny, touching, action, characters introduction.

Like I said, I can't stop loving this book.

So, let's see here:

Clark gets a pet dog, Krypto, from Krypton.
He dresses up in costume as a teenager and performs heroic deeds in Smallville.
He meets Lex in Smallville.
He meets the Legion of Superheroes and has adventures with them in the future.
He joins the Daily Planet, where he pretends to be a clumsy nerd.
He has a cousin Kara from Krypton who becomes Supergirl.
Brainiac captured the bottle city of Kandor.

It's almost as if the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" never happened. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, because Superman's backstory has been a mess ever since the Crisis. People who compare this unfavorably to Byrne's "The Man of Steel" or Waid's "Birthright" don't seem to realize that Geoff Johns isn't at liberty here to start Superman over from scratch, he has to take the all the details of the new official Superman backstory which have been dribbled out and form a coherent story from them, which he does admirably well. I admit I haven't been reading the comic lately, so the Metallo and Parasite origins here may be original, as far as I know.

As far as the art: well, it's not bad. The Superman/Clark is obviously based on Christopher Reeve, which looks kind of creepy when Clark is just a kid. Lex apparently has only two facial expressions: ticked off or crazy. And Jimmy and young Lex look oddly similar. Other than that, it's not bad.

3.5 rounded down, because I have to give Superman: Earth One 4 stars.

[Edit: DC has rebooted Superman again recently (2011), so this origin story is no longer currently "valid."]
[Update February 2016: Since the Pre-Flashpoint Superman is back:

Superman: Lois & Clark (2015-) #1

...I suppose this is still his origin story.]
