The artwork in this volume is remarkable particularly for the presence of Jack Burnley's work, whose density and sophistication of inking is a marked contrast to the simplified cartooniness of Joe Schuster and his various imitators.. While still simple by modern standards, Burnley's art employed light and shadow in a photo-realistic way that gave his characters solidity and drama, something of a precursor to the kind of thing that would later be seen in the work of artists like Wally Wood and Reed Crandall.
The writing still portrays Superman himself as the most, and often only, "super" element in the stories, facing 'forties-style tough guy gangsters and mad scientists whose agendas are refreshingly less earth-shattering than those that you tend to find in Major Hollywood Comic Book Blockbusters these days.. I personally find the insistently "epic" ambitions of comic-book-based films to involve a tediously repetitious pattern of demolishing entire cities that's more of a shopworn cliché than a genuinely gripping dramatic hook anymore...

Never a Superman fan per se, I found this nicely priced, chronological collections of the original comics to be well worth the tab on Amazon. Good stuff This IS your father's Superman and it's a delight to read and own.

Superman Chronicles, Vol. 3 by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster is another batch of
Golden Age goodies at a great price.
This is a very different Superman than the one I'm used to. One can only
wonder what he would be like today if the original creators had maintained
control of their character.

Most people in my generation grew up wanting the Golden Age originals. DC's "Chronicles" series gives collectors the opportunity to buy them at a reasonable price here on Amazon. Pure comic-book fun!

Great comic book, my son loves it!

I got into Superman after getting into Smallville. It's very enjoyable to get back to the origins of this impressive legacy. I can't wait to see the evolution of Superman personally and in his powers. I will collect all of these chronicles as long as they publish them, and hopefully they will publish them all the way through.

I love to read old superman comics. The Chronicles is a way to read them all in order - fantastic!
What can I say, I love Superman. I can't say nothing negative even if there is something negative to say. I reas all Superman stories whether they are good or not and some do suck. However, this early stories demonstrate how Superman should be. In some of these stories some criminals died and Superman din't care, or he hurt some real bad and didn't care.
