Cartoonist Terry LaBan documents a crazy world that challenges you to think a bit and this great paperback collection from 1995: "Three Dollar Fare" collects much of one of the best comic series to sneek a peek into the long-gone era that was the late 1980's and early 1990's. Based around two young adults, Danny and Suzy the stories are honest and real but at the same time they never lose their comix-edge of always being a bit left-of-center. How does that line go?

The cover from Terry LaBan's International Bob, published by Fantagraphics Books. LaBan's first foray into comics was his series Unsupervised Existence, published by Fantagraphics beginning in 1989. Loosely based on LaBan's own life at the time, Unsupervised Existence was a semi-humorous comic book soap opera which followed the adventures of Suzy and Danny, a young, bohemian couple living in Cleveland. Suzy, an underemployed intellectual, spends a lot of time hanging around with her friends and trying to figure out what to do with her life. Danny is a cab-driving poet with a heart of gold and a spine of mush. His girlfriend, Suzy, is an angst-filled intellectual whose interest include everything except paying her half of the rent. It's their stories and the stories of their friends and the people in their world that fill the pages of this comical, tragic, and painfully honest collection.

From Publishers Weekly Several of LaBan's "Unsupervised Existence" stories are collected here in a friendly tribute to Danny, a lovable r; Suzy, an unemployed tender-heart; and their group of eccentric buddies.

This is a a weird-fun world of up's and downs that can go off in many directions and there is little control as to what can and will happen. At it's center this is a love story that is doomed to crash and burn and there are dangers to deal with and overcome.

Some have compared Terry's work to R. Crumb but for me (it seems) more inspired by the work of Gilbert Shelton as the art is really loose and imaginative. The stories are like mini-movies that need to see life on the big screen as Terry is a master of this craft and deserves a larger audience to enjoy his work

Terry LaBan, is one of the great ones and "Love's Not a Three Dollar Fare" is one of his finest collections.

Have you ever been watching something on television, something that unexpectedly catches hold of your imagination and makes you fall in love with the characters, only to have the words "To Be Continued" flash across the screen? You didn't even really want to watch the damn thing anyway; it was "just on." I love Terry Laban. I adore these characters. I want to see more, but there isn't any more. I still recommend "Love's Not a $3 Fair;" it's better than "International Bob," although "$3 Fair" is incomplete. How does that line go? "Better to have loved and lost..."
