Vectorcardiography in Congenital Heart Disease : A Method for Estimating Severity. by Robert Curtis Ellison.

Echocardiography in patients with congenital heart disease remains difficult due to the complex right ventricular geometry. Clinically approved parameters for the quantification of right ventricular dysfunction are lacking. The standardisation of the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic data in numerous patients and the determination of normal values have to be achieved. Particularly new techniques like Tissue Doppler Imaging and Strain/Strain Rate provides a new approach to non-invasive assessment of myocardial function and could be implemented into clinical practice.

Congenital malformations of the heart are often dismissed as a form of complex heart disease, which is too difficult to understand, and is best referred to the specialists. The authors of this handbook, however, aim to dispel this myth. The advent of cross-sectional and, more recently, three-dimensional echocardiography, enables the structural malformations to be visualised virtually non-invasively.
