By improving strength and flexibility, athletes can excel in training and boost performance. The Pilates Edge : An Athlete's Guide to Strength and Performance. by Daniel Loigerot and Karrie Adamany. I am not an athlete, but I found this book very useful. I'd ignored it for a few years but recently acquired it. It goes through just about every Pilates mat exercise that I have ever come across (most other manuals omit at least a few of them) and explains the purpose of the exercise (something many manuals neglect to do).

A lot of exercise books are difficult to use for an actual workout. This book solves that problem with detailed descriptions for each move and later a purely visual guide that shows thumbnails of each pose. I'm not an "athelete", but I like to workout and wanted to start pilates to help with those aches and pains I get from the gym. This book is going to make it easy to get a pilates workout in a few times a week.
This book is incredibly well written, clear and concise. It gives great tips for those who do engage in the major sports featured (tennis, golf, skiing, running, etc.). Highly recommended!

Good condition book. Good description of exercises and explanations of what sequences to do for what sports and conditions.

Buy this book to foil the comments from you know who(s) Like: What? are you doing girly exercises now? The typical Pilates instruction is women oriented. Especially the follow along tapes and discs. It would be like a guy having a women's magazine laying around. Sure to get comments. The main reason for having this particular "athlete's" book is not to learn any great sports secrets related to Pilates but rather to not give your smart mouthed relative any fodder for comments - It is a manly athlete book after all. Pilates is obviously not just for women since I can't do the movements as demonstrated thus proving I need to do them. The gains in flexibility, core, balance is the pay off.

Otherwise as a sports book it is only so so. (see video and chart below) It attempts rather feebly to package Pilates in a sports format. It basically takes the prescribed series of movements and alters the order slightly under the guise of it being specific to a certain sport. It does not take long to realize that such a effort is just packaging. This observation does not diminish the value of Pilates it just reviews the packaging effort.
As a Pilates book it is adequate. I find it very helpful as a ready reference at the finger tips for a Pilates beginner like me (advanced in other areas however ) If a reader ever advances enough to do all the movements then this book should be adequate for the rest of their life.

To understand the movements presented in print better I watched all of them on Youtube. Particularly the series from the 3 women from core [...] by Howcast. They explained everything with detail and insight. Like exhale when completing a movement to put the breaks on. I have done that but never verbalized it as such: put the brakes on via exhale. Interesting. They are good looking women but that is not the reason to watch. They make good comments. I also got some VHS tapes at Goodwill to follow along as a start. Most are women coaxing other women. I'm a guy looking for golf benefits so they don't appeal to me much as follow alongs. I'll find some man golf follow alongs on Youtube later.

I also found a chart ([...] showing the beginner, intermediate and advanced movements to understand just how the book stacks up for sequence and completeness. The book seems to get more varied and extensive with the advanced movements.

The main reason for having this particular "athlete's" book is not to learn any great sports secrets related to Pilates but rather to not give your smart mouthed relative any fodder for comments - It is a manly athlete book after all.

I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.

I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.

I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.

An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

This book is great for anyone who is interested in Pilates. If you do other sports, like biking, running or golf, it gives you appropriate excercises to compliment your activities. It provides outstanding descriptions and pictures of the exercises.
Highly recommend this book...even if you just want a Pilates book with pictures.....

I have been practicing Pilates for about one year. The Pilates Edge has helped me to focus on my own sports - biking and skiing - and develop specific muscles for those sports and avoid injury. The book is very detailed and the photos help tremendously. Thanks for taking a new approach to an already great exercise program!

As a cyclist and runner, I never before thought that I could benefit from Pilates. This book definitely changed that, and I recommend it to both serious athletes and anyone looking to improve their endurance and well-being. The stretches are great, and the pictures are easy to follow.
