I don't usually write reviews, but this time I feel that it's very important for people to know that this book offers a REAL solution to addiction. I can't be grateful enough for having found it. It works, people, really, it works. I have tried so many times (at least 20 times) to get off my opiate addiction during the last six years, but nothing seemed to work. Any addict will relate to the depression that this fight puts you in. When you read this book, you understand completely why you feel as you feel. I can"t explain it so well as they do. But the main problem is that your brain changes while taking drugs, and these changes last for many years if not all life long. The authors state a great truth: many addicts manage to overcome the physical part of the withdrawal, as hard as this can be. But the harder part to overcome is the "psychological" or "mental" part. When you feel so depressed that you can't even smile or speak normally with people or eat or take a shower, etc, then it's no wonder that one goes back to drugs just to feel "normal". And the authors of this book understand this fact so well, that not only do they describe it wonderfully, but they have managed to create a detox plan based on simple stuff such as food supplements (vitamins, amino acids, essential fats, etc), and food. They also give you some other advices about activities that can make you feel better, like exercising or meditating. The whole book is written from the perspective of how the brain works. For example, they explain that exercising is good when quitting drugs because it raises your endorphin levels. Another thing you will find in this book are very precise instructions on how to quit different addictions -not only opiates- including cigarettes and antidepressants.
Finally, I would like to explain my experience with the detox plan of this book:
I was taking methadone prescribed by my doctor and also using heroin now and then. I felt really really hocked: I couldn't control my cravings anymore and didn't see a possible way out. I had already tried everything, even Ibogaine (which I also recommend if one has managed to stay away from ilegal drugs for some time, which was not my case when I tried it). I've been almost all my life depressed. But lately my depression increased so much, that I started having suicidal thoughts (I had no intention to act on them, but the thoughts popped constantly into my mind). I couldn't control the sad feelings and cried a lot in every place. I was considering taking again antidepressants, but when I read this book I saw that there are other more natural ways to cure depression and that, on the long run, antidepressants do you more harm then good. I also understood that my depression was the main reason why I had always failed in my attempts to quit drugs. Everything in the book made a lot of sense and helped me to see the big picture of how addiction really works. But I didn't have the money to buy all the supplements of their quitting plan. So I bought just one, the one I thought would have the stronger effect on my opiate addiction: 5-HTP. I was able to choose that one from the information provided in the book about how heroin and opiates change the serotonin levels of the brain. Theoretically, one should start feeling the effects immediately or after just one or two days. But I guess my serotonin levels were extremely low, or maybe I lacked also other important nutrients that help transform the amino acid in serotonin. Anyway, I didn't feel anything until after two weeks. But suddenly, one day I felt better: my mood was better, I felt motivated to make the things I had wanted to make for many years, and I felt I had the energy to do them. This change was so profound I knew it came from the 5-HTP. Since then I have bought many other supplements recommended in the book, I have started to exercise and I am reducing every week my methadone dose. And this time I know that it will work and that I will manage to stay off drugs once I'm off the methadone, because I don"t have any cravings thanks to the program of this incredibly wonderful book!
One last thing I want to point out is the difference between the effect of antidepressants and amino acids: with antidepressants you feel less depressed or not at all depressed, but you loose contact with your real feelings. With amino acids, on the other hand, you feel more like "you", you feel more happy, but can still feel the things that make you be "you". For example, I lost my brother (and best friend) three years ago and it is something that the antidepressants completely and artificially blocked. With the amino acids I feel happier, but I'm still able to connect with my deepest "not-so-happy" feelings when I want to.
I wouldn't recommend to buy the audio version of the book. There are too many tables, recipes and specifics of food supplements that one needs to see on paper. I would also recommend to take notes while reading the book, because it's so much information, that one can't possibly remember everything. I regret not having done it. I just used the highlighting and the bookmarks of my kindle, and at the end there were so many things marked out, that the marks weren't useful anymore. Now I have started reading the book again trying to summarize the important stuff with regular pen and paper.

This book explains what vitamins and supplements to take while quitting any drug. I think that you can quit drugs supplement-free without feeling like s***. I will say that I did buy all of the pills that the book recommended and I did really enjoy the 5HTP that was suggested. It really helped with stress and overeating while quitting smoking.

the authors know their "stuff".... and they are good communicators
this is not only about addiction... it is quite informative about the internal workings of our body

the book is motivational and makes me realize I can make a difference in keeping my body healthy and functioning at its best.

This book is fantastic! Am using some suggestions about supplements to curb depression with outstanding results! As a person with limited medical coverage and a need to perform at my best daily, this book has been a life saver! Plan to use in my couseling practice as well for those who do not want to use meds and have mild symptoms. Great book!!!

A great book that is based on solid evidence-based practice. Most recovery programs are not grounded in evidence, as this system is..... And the results are there too.

After searching in many places, this book finally gave me the information I was looking for. I can highly recommend it.

I read this book and started the program over a month ago. My physical and mental health are still improving, not where I want to be yet, but I have not had ANY sugary filled deserts in 35 days. I've been struggling with low blood sugar and trying to stay away from sugar since I was 12 - 36 years. I've tried Kathleen Desmaison and The Zone and Eat Right 4 Your Type. All of those have been helpful, but I've never licked the habit for this long before without a huge struggle. I don't even WANT sugar anymore. I've NEVER been able to say that. I'm excited.
This is an excellent "how to" book. It can save many of lives. This info is what the medical profession does not want you to know. I am withdrawing from effexor with no symptoms. Amino acids are essential in the healing processes as well as other recommended supplements and changing subconscious fears and beliefs.
