I've probaby checked this out of the local public library at least eight times. When you do something like that, it's time to just buy the book. I like this book's straightforward, simple approach - and one that doesn't insult your intelligence or talk down to you. The chapters on jealousy and bipolar disorder are especially well-written. Get this if you need an all-purpose guide to mental illness.

Societies in which experts think they are responsible for social order behavior and maintaining a highly productive level of hostilities two thousand years after Greeks, Romans, and the Hebrew scholars with scriptural brain skewers put man a little lower than the angels, dimorphism special weapons have adopted the idea of mental illness as a concept to isolate individuals, cults, and families engaged in polygamy from the main stream of mega-death entertainment end of life on earth wave of excitement. This like it or lump it scheme has come to my attention as the potential restraining order to keep lurking from turning into stalking by electronic pussy willow slash and churn.

In an adversary situation, whenever I am criticized I strike back against the entire world to avoid ad hominem breaks with anything less than the entire system in the concept as a scheme without which anything human lacks meaning. A character described as being grandiose in this book has egocentric defense mechanisms, and manic behavior acts like a famous person. My shrink told me I was the most intelligent person he ever met, so when a nurse asked me about having grandiose thoughts, I felt intrusively that she was not supporting any of my reasons for being there. It was easy for me the think a medical establishment exists to suck up the insurance coverage of a risk pool, even if they have to use Jesus persaflage identity theft to do it. In late 1994 I had been tapering off lithium medication after a few years of avoiding episodes in which I could obviously outsmart the world, but my shrink thought if I had a great deal of money I would just be considered eccentric. Only people who have to work for a living would become as intricate in thinking like a pop star as my memory replacing personal interaction with musically inspired ideology having nothing up my sleeve like Rocky and moosejaw taking on a world of regimentation for uniformity. I would rather be a genius than get stuck in an Enron room for some medical system future of wheat dementia.
If this book better ruled out signs of other medical problems first then I would like it better. Yes the book is ok if you really have a mental illness and not low vitamin B12 or low T, etc., which cause similar symptoms.

Unfortunately in the real world I read this book and others like it when doctors convinced me that I had Bipolar Disorder. Years later I finally had blood tests that showed B12 and testosterone levels 1/3 below the normal minimum. Doctors prescribed supplements and I am now basically cured of what now appears to have been a false mental illness diagnosis. Or at least symptoms of these other medical problems were missed because they were similar to the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and other mental illness.

So if the book was revised to better stress blood work and tests for other medical causes then I would rate it better. A false diagnosis is costly when your real condition gets worse so it is best to rule out other causes at the start.
