by John F. Finerty

Warpath and Bivouac book.

Warpath and Bivouac book. A very spirited narrative of Indian warfare  .

John E. Finerty (1846-1908) was a newspaper reporter for the Chicago Times who was assigned by his paper to accompany and report .

It was mounted in 1876 under the overall command of General Alfred Terry with Generals George Crook, and Nelson Miles, as sub column commanders. The book is a clear picture of both Indian warfare and U. S. Army policy in this last great Indian war.

Although the author, John Finerty was in the field as War Correspondent for the Chicago Times, during battle, on the march and in bivouac he was an active member of the 3rd Calvary. This work is considered an excellent source of information on the battles and lifestyles of the American Army during the great period of Westward Expansion. John F. Finerty was an Irish born, Chicago newspaperman, famed in the latter part of the 19th century. He accompanied Gen. Crook and others during the Indian Wars campaigns and produced this memoir. Not only was Finerty's tale of westward expansion, paternalism and aggressive condescension towards native Americans lauded during his time, but was perfectly acceptable in Eisenhower-era America. From this point in the 21st century, the attitudes expressed leave one completely aghast. His cavalier description of . troops firing on a surprised group of Indians and the sounds of the babies crying will break your heart.

I was very impressed with this novel. The author of this book not only accompanied the U.S. military, he served with the average soldiers in the ditches, on horseback and on foot. Being in that situation, he reports the events of 1876 from the perspective of the generals, the infintry, and the American indians point of view. It makes me appreciate the extreems everyone endured during those troubled times.
