This book compares very poorly to the Usborne history books covering earlier periods (my daughter and I love those books). This book is only suitable for older children, since they squeeze in a lot of text. What I really don't like is the artibrary, idiosyncratic and often idiotic selection of what events of the 20th century are "notable". 7 people found this helpful.

Twentieth Century THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, 1 9 0 1 to 2 0 0 0. VIKING. The book is intended to be a history of the world in a given period, yet not only can it not be factually complete, it must leave some history out altogether. It is partly because a world history cannot relate such matters to its overriding themes as can the histories of particular cultures, civilizations, or countries, partly because the numbers of human beings they decisively affect seem in the world context too few to spend space on them.

Against the Modern World book. The first history of Traditionalism, an important yet surprisingly little-known twentieth-century anti-modern movement. Comprising a number of often secret but sometimes very influential religious groups in the West and in the Islamic world, it affected mainstream and radical politics in Europe and the development of the field of religious studies in the United States.

The book examines the origins of Traditionalism in the Renaissance, and then traces the development of the groups and movements that resulted, as well as modification in doctrine. The final chapter looks at Traditionalism’s possible influence in the future, and asks why so many intellectuals found this anti-modernist movement so attractive. Covers twentieth-century history, technology, and society.

Which means that the century is upon u. Yet Hitler is barely twenty-two and things in the sun aren't so hot besides. The activity of the sun excites the Chinese to abolish pigtails and then proclaim a republic with Sun Yat-Sen their first President.

Which means that the century is upon us. Diminishing the lifespan of Russian dreadnoughts to naught, Japan tells urbi et orbi it's loathe to lurk in the wings of geography. In Petersburg those whose empty stomachs churn take to the streets. Although how three hundred twenty-five millions can be handled by a Parliament, frankly, beats me. That is, how many seats would they have had in that grand pavilion?

The first history of Traditionalism, an important yet surprisingly little-known twentieth-century anti-modern movement. In the nineteenth century, at a time when progressive intellectuals had lost faith in Christianity's ability to deliver religious and spiritual truth, the West discovered non-Western religious writings.
