1939: Countdown to War has been added to your Cart. Richard Overy raises several critical historical questions as he recounts the two weeks before Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 thus beginning WW2. He portrays Hitler as a methodical world class leader who continually tests the resolve of European leaders to pair their armies with their words. Overy contrasts the low world opinion of Hitler with the near heroic stature among his countrymen earned by standing up to the unfairness of the Versailles Treaty ending WW1. Could there have been a negotiated settlement after German and Soviet occupation of Poland?

Richard James Overy (born 23 December 1947) is a British historian who has published extensively on the history of World War II and Nazi Germany.

On August 24, 1939, the world held its collective breath as Hitler and Stalin signed the now infamous nonaggression pact, signaling an imminent invasion of Poland and daring Western Europe to respond. In this dramatic account of the final days before the outbreak of World War II, award-winning historian Richard Overy vividly chronicles the unraveling of peace, hour by grim hour, as politicians and ordinary citizens brace themselves for a war that could spell the end of European civilization. Nothing was entirely predictable or inevitable. The West hoped that Hitler would see sense if they stood firm. Hitler was convinced the West would back down. Moments of uncertainty alternated with those of confrontation; secret intelligence was used by both sides to support their hopes. The one constant feature was the determination of Poland, a country created only in 1919, to protect its newfound independence against a vastly superior enemy. 1939 documents a defining moment in the violent history of the twentieth century.

Did the 1937 Hossbach memorandum and Hitler's invasions of the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia make an avoidance of WW2 unlikely?

This book provides a short (about 120 pages) history of the diplomatic events preceding the onset of the Second World War. On the positive side the book is very well researched. It documents well events such as the backdoor diplomacy that was underway between France and England and Goering that, to a large extent, bypassed Hitler. It also covers other factors in the diplomatic equation that were rarely covered in most previous works on the subject. A perfect example is the physical exhaustion of the main players and the impacts that Overy posited that had on the negotiations. On the negative side much of what the book contains is already common knowledge. For example Hitler's surprise at the English and French declaring war on Germany. All and all, however, the fact that the book is well researched and well written more than makes up for its negatives.

An excellent story of the time just before the start of WWII.

This is a good overview of the final days leading up to WWII. It is not an in depth analysis of events. To understand the start of WWII a lot more discussion of Hitler and Chamberlain would be necessary; however, to get a grasp on the overarching events - which is absolutely necessary before getting into the minute details - this book does the job.

It is clearly written and easy to follow, plus it is short. No wading through a lot of extraneous material. Mr. Overy gets right to the heart of the matter. It does need better maps. I read the Kindle version and the map was insufficient to discern the overall situation in the Polish corridor. Also, a little more detail on how Hitler had pushed the world to this point might be necessary. I have read many books on WWII and the start of the conflict; thus, I have background a new reader on WWII may not have. I think the book may assume this background.

This short book is a very good history/commentary on unfortunatekly a very brief interval just before the official tart of WWII. It is indeed thorough and absorbing, but i thi8nk could have more prelude.

The days from 24 August to 3 September, mostly the diplomacy. Short, 124 pages. Not nearly as interesting as his earlier book on the war in Russia which was outstanding

Extremely interesting & informative book. Well-written except for a bit of repetitiveness. Definitely worth reading.
Good evaluation of the months right before the start of war. Reconfirmed the folly of compromizing with your enemies. Should be read today for those who want to do so.
