This is a short book, a compilation of articles which Bert Minkin wrote containing material about the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904. Given that he wrote articles on various topics which also touched the Fair, there is repetition in the compilation where he uses a particular story or claim about the Fair in different contexts in different essays. Despite these repetitions, this is a delightful and informative read

LOUIS - At the beginning of the American Century, premature babies were literally a sideshow exhibit. Visitors would pay to walk through rows of tiny babies in incubators. The more likely explanation, according to Bert Minkin, an enthusiast who wrote "Legacies of the St. Louis World's Fair," is that some local people would take their dogs to the fairgrounds and sell them to the tribes. While African Americans were allowed entry into the fair if they purchased admission, there was backlash to how they were treated inside

Legacies of the St. ouis, the preparations for it, major ingredientes and what happened after that. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for a feel of the fair and the world at that time. The book starts with how the world was at that time and how the preparations for the fair took place and ends with a narration of what happened to the buildings (and the Ferris wheel) after the fair. It was interesting to read that the fair itself was forgotten until the 1944 film, "Meet Me in S. ouis".

The St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, technically the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, was held to celebrate the centenary of the purchase of a huge tract of land from the French. Despite being originally scheduled to be held in 1903, planning and scale meant that the fair didn't open until 30 April 1904. The gates of the fairground in Forest Park, St. Louis, stayed open until 1 December 1904, and an average of 100,000 people attended each day. In total over twenty million people saw the exhibition.

The World's Fair Souvenir Cookbook" by Sarah Tyson Rorer bears witness to that. The object of this book is twofold," she wrote in the preface. First, to present in a compact form a few of the choice recipes used in the Eastern Pavilion (at the fair). and, secondly, to show how simply and easily all foods may be prepared. Rorer ran a 1,200-seat restaurant at the fair, the Model Restaurant. Few copies survive; one is part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition collection in the Library of the Missouri Historical Society. From 1883 to 1903, Rorer had operated the Philadelphia School of Cooking. In all, she wrote 54 cookbooks and booklets.
