Prior to his death in 1986, Mr. Russell, turned his manuscript for the intended Charles King book over to renowned historian and writer, Paul L. Hedren. By April of 1991 the book was in print from the University of Nebraska Press: Lincoln. (My copy is dated April 9th, 1991).

"This study of Charles King (1844-1933), one of the best-known and most widely published chroniclers of the frontier army, is based in large part on interviews and correspondence Don Russell conducted with King in the decade before King's death.

With this being the first review of this book, it is difficult to understand why this book has received so little notice. Between Mr. Hedren and Mr. Russell, General Charles King has received a lasting biography. A biography that needs to be read by a larger audience. Glad to have it on my western shelves along with other Hedren and Russell books.

Read on book-a-roos.
