PRAISE FOR BLOOMINGTON GAYS "Cronin's latest book about the Bloomington that he loves, but also loves to hate, is by far his most personal. Because of this, the book is not only entertaining, as we have come to expect of him, but also enlightening. Do read it!"Kenneth R. R. This book profiles the ancient universities and their distinctive organizational cultures, reveals their customs, ceremonies, and traditions, their quirks and quiddities, recounts their complicated histories, describes their architectural wonders (libraries, museums, anatomy theaters, botanical gardens) and treasures (rare manuscripts, antiquities, paintings, and objects d’art of all kinds), and introduces their famous alumni, distinguished scholars, Nobel Prize-winning scientists, and famously. eccentric personalities.

Town and Gown in Middle America. Welcome to my home, a quixotic mix of small-town life and larger than life campus, squirreled away in the flatlands of Middle America, where torpor is sometimes mistaken for nirvanic serenity, irony for insult and "ethnographic dazzle" for deep differences. Blaise Cronin was born and raised in Ireland. Trinity College Dublin and the Queen’s University of Belfast graciously granted him the degrees necessary to avoid working for a living. He came to Middle America via London (England) and Glasgow (Scotland).

DURING the next two days Paul was fully engaged. Queen's University was breaking up for the long vacation and there were numerous obligations connected with the end of term. By general request he acted as pianist at the annual student sing-song. A mislaid library book proved difficult to trace. There was a last minute chemistry "practical," and he suffered the usual tension in awaiting the results.

Welcome to Bloomington: a world of grey cells and limestone, catfish and cheerleaders, binge drinking and bigots, Ockham's razor and buzz cuts. This is the tiny college town where Alfred Kinsey catalogued gall wasps before stinging a nation into belated sexual awareness. If you're gay or Greek, love opera or hoops, Bloomington is heaven on earth; we have as many same-sex couples as sorority sisters, as many divas as athletes. This is not a book I would recommend. It consists of short vignettes about uninteresting topics presented in a stiff, uninteresting manner. If you do take the time to read it, bring along a dictionary, one that includes foreign words. In one 3-page vignette about parking on campus the author included these words: jeunesse doree; Polizei's philosophy, and Stanley Fish-like. In the same vignette he mentioned a former president of Dartmouth, Clark Kerr's lectures at Harvard, his "racing green Xj8 and Hampton socialite Lizzie Grubman. Where's the fun in all that?

A somewhat caustic book, trying to skirt on humor but actually heavily scored with sexism in each chapter. Unfortunately reveals a greater problem found in academia- an environment where a more progressive attitude is expected, but in reality is plagued with dated attitudes and a narrow lens. I'd pass.

A friend of mine, who I might add is highly cultured, recommended this book to me, and I must say that I will forever be in his debt for the suggestion. Bloomington Days is a work of unheralded genius! Blaise Cronin is the consummate Renaissance Man, a brilliant scholar and writer, and it would hardly be an exaggeration to proclaim that Cronin possesses a wit unmatched by any modern humorist. With the keen sense of observation possessed by de Tocqueville combined with the jocularity of Oscar Wilde, Cronin dazzles his reader with unbridled charm.

Ever-so-subtle sarcasm is the name of Cronin's game; most men who posses such tantalizing worldly charm but live in a giant sea of dunces, goons, and hicks (Cronin's Bloomington) would be reduced to a life of hollow intellectual posturing to pass the time. However, instead of kicking these cretins off of his proverbial cultural and intellectual lawn en route to complete insanity, Cronin's quaint send up of these Midwestern lummoxes artfully sidesteps his utter disdain for their ilk. All I can say is... I empathize!

For more of Cronin's humor, in addition to his brilliant work on Bloomington, I recommend his sidesplittingly and ruthlessly hilarious article "What a Library is Not" published in the Library Journal in which Cronin gives the homeless and society's other dregs their due comeuppance.

A great read full of insights into academia vs. reality. Any resident of Bloomington, past, present or future, would enjoy this book.
