A Category 4 storm that barreled into the Carolinas during the hurricane season of 1954 left a path of destruction that would eventually pave the way for the development of Myrtle Beach into a major tourist destination. As the first (and so far) only recorded Category 4 storm to strike North Carolina, Hurricane Hazel also remains prominent in the record books as one of the region’s worst hurricanes in history. Great book if you are interested in North Carolina history in general. I bought it because as I was flipping through it at a friend's home one day I can upon a picture of my Grandfather's car dealership that had been damaged by Hurricane Hazel! I had never seen the picture before and noone in my family even knew it existed! Quite a find!
