Mission to Amish People. More than a biography, this book is about a boy being determined to change his place in the world, and the miraculous reversals of misfortune. It’s about the prayers of a mother, the idiosyncrasies and love of a father, and the strength of a family. It is, in other words, the story of us.

As an architect and lover of history, I appreciated the comprehensive approach and personal touch to the Amish buildings. Then, of course, one of the featured farms and buildings were built by my ancestors so I am a little bit more than biased.

Great book

I bought this book at a gift for Valentine's Day, thinking it would show many Amish barns, their construction and variety. Instead, the book is a history of a few foundation Amish families, their homesteads and geneology. It was not a successful gift, alas.

While the title of this book suggests the obvious--that it deals with the houses and barns of the Amish--there is much more to it. After a cursory discussion of Amish architectural preferences, the author focuses on three Amish farms to give the reader a better sense of how Amish farmsteads and farming practices have evolved. These accounts are, however, largely genealogical. Overall, the book is very enlightening and informative; it is written in a clear and refreshingly lucid manner, and contains numerous black & white photographs of homes, farm buildings and equipment--and, in some cases, livestock. Truly a pleasure to read.
