History of Ancient Egypt, Том 2. On attempting to follow them along the same route, the Egyptians were overwhelmed by the returning waters ; the chariot-wheels were entangled in the soft ooze; the horses and their riders perished; the chosen captains were drowned-' the depths covered them ; they sank to the bottom as a stone. Fascinating account; archaic period writing style somehow helps propel patient readers back in time. Now must read a contemporary history!

I've very much enjoyed the book, it offers a great overview of ancient Egypt's civilization (these kind of books are hard to find nowadays because I guess people specialize in only one pharaoh or one period...).

But obviously the book is a bit out of date being 100 years old (e.g. various strange remarks, Tutankhamun's tomb wasn't discovered yet when the book was published, so there's no mention of him, the scientists now know why Hatshepsut died and this book is offering some speculations we now know weren't correct...).

But overall it's a great read if you want to know more about ancient Egyptians. I read it before going on vacation in Egypt and it really helped me understand better the monuments I saw there.
