Next Ragnhild convinced Thorfinn grandson, Einar Klining, to kill Havard for which she would marry him and make him Earl. Havard was killed at Stenness on Orkney, though the date is uncertain. This he did, but then Ragnhild took Havard's younger brother Liot Thorfinnsson as her husband.

For much of its history, Orkney had its own language, culture and institutions. The prehistoric inhabitants created monuments which are unmatched anywhere in Europe, and the medieval period saw the magnificent earldom that expressed itself through the Orkneyinga Saga and the building of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. Like Shetland, Orkney was heavily influenced by Viking traders and raiders from Scandinavia, and for a long period it formed an outlying part of the kingdom of Norway.Over 500 years ago, however, the islands lost their Scandinavian links and since then have had a sometimes difficult association with mainland Scotland. More recent times have seen the use of Orkney as a strategic stronghold during two world wars, and the far-reaching impact of oil and gas exploitation in the North Sea. This classic book covers the whole fascinating story and will be of interest to readers far beyond the rocky shores of Orkney itself.

I read this book in preparation for a trip to Orkney. Although I found it sometimes dense and having more information than I necessarily needed for my purposes, the book was very thorough and informative and definitely added a lot of helpful background for my visit to this magical place.

If you are really interested in finding out anything regarding 'Orkney' you will want and must read this book. Absolutely facinating. I know more about that island than I ever would have guessed I would learn. The people, the country, the struggles and the amazing accomplishments.Read and enjoy. Wm.P. Thomson is a master at writing history and making it so very interesting.
Na
Orkney has a wealth of ancient ruins and with it spectacular attractions of scenery.
It is unique in that it contains evidence of the Neolithic Period in abundance.

There is Orkney Literature. Learning and the arts comprise a part of an old tradition.

Scholarly addressed, but with a contemporary style of writing makes this book a true pleasure to read. William P. L. Thomson is an authority.

The Viking period in Orkney is immensely important to Western Civilisation understanding and is
resolutely covered.

Strongly recommended!
