Sir Thomas, an experienced warrior with military experience dating back 40 years is known for his brief but pivotal appearances in Shakespeare's Henry V, where he is correctly portrayed as an elderly, white haired veteran.

1415 Agincourt - Anne Curry. It deliberately avoids the great Tudor histories of Edward Hall and Raphael Holinshed, which formed the basis of many older works and popular views of the battle, not least because of the inspiration that they gave Shakespeare.

She begins by piecing together what actually happened when Henry V led a smallish English army against a large French one in an expansionist bid to seize France. Curry, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Southampton, also debunks myths such as the one about the V sign originating as a gesture of defiance at Agincourt when English bowmen survived to taunt the French who’d vowed to cut off the crucial three right-hand fingers of any archer they caught – nice story but not true.

For many commentators then and now, it was the English archers who won the day for Henry V. This lavishly illustrated history re-tells the story of the battle and Henry V's Normandy campaign from the perspective of the commander of the English archers, Sir Thomas Erpingham. Sir Thomas, an experienced warrior with military experience dating back 40 years is known for his brief but pivotal appearances in Shakespeare's Henry V, where he is correctly portrayed as an elderly, white haired veteran. At 57 he was one of the oldest there and a close personal confident of the King. But what was his background? How did he command his archers to such a place in history? And what role did the longbow and battlefield tactics play in the final analysis of victory?

A bit misleading, as the work is curated, but not written, by Anne Curry. Still, some very interesting details about the battle.

For anyone interested in the battle of Azincourt, this is most definitly a must. I found it most fascinating as I shoot longbow myself, and to read about what the archers of that period went through is quite something. A great boot, what more can I say.
