Stevie Davies' "Emily Bronte: Heretic" is an incredibly insightful and fascinatingly written analysis of Emily Jane's work and (to a smaller extent) life. She attempts to dispel some of the myths about Bronte-namely those of her as hermited virgin, suicidal misanthropist, and amateur.

Davies is also good at debunking the myth of Emily as a heroine of unambiguous courage: Brontë retreated into a dreamworld and the parsonage, angrily avoiding strangers, and felt compelled to "brag" (her word) about having "no coward soul". The tone of that poem is defensive, Davies argues: "Serene self-confidence does not have to boast" (145).

I stumbled across Stevie Davies in the footnotes of an edition I purchased of Anne Bronte's "Tenant of Wildfell Hall" she had edited for Penguin Classics. I'd already read different editions of the book twice through the years when I decided to buy my own, and fell immediately in love with the insight she provided into someone I think a very under rated author.

In looking up her other works, when I saw "Heretic" I had to buy it! When it arrived, I knew I was right; not a paragraph goes by when her words do not touch something inside me that says "Yes, exactly", or "that makes perfect sense", or some other little light bulb goes off over my head.

Buy this book! I can't recommend it highly enough!
