In the hearts of volunteers who mobilize resources to build houses, Habitat for Humanity signifies caring. However, few people know that thirty years ago, successful entrepreneur Millard Fuller and his wife Linda left behind their materialistic lifestyle and crumbling marriage to start over as missionaries in Zaire. Upon returning to Georgia, they started building houses to bring new life to the poverty-stricken as their personal Christian ministry.

Millard recruited Jimmy Carter to work with Habitat when he left the White House. Together they attracted leaders from church and state worldwide. Habitat became an international movement with 1700 affiliates and a Board of Directors comprised of increasingly large corporate donors. As it grew, a new, more secular vision evolved, and eventually Millard and Linda found themselves alone starting over. The Fullers responded with God is not done with us. Within days, they were back raising money and building houses for The Fuller Center for Housing for Katrina victims and in Nepal, Nigeria, and Romania.

Sweet story of the founders of Habitat for Humanity. I loved how he learned so much in business and was able to walk away from it all to become greater than the norm. They have drive and I'm happy they pulled so many behind to make the world better for everyone. More of this!

Read it for a book club. Learned information about Habitat for Humanity. Since I admire the work of Habitat for Humanity, I was saddened to read about the divisions.

Fascinating book!! Very compelling! Because of this book, I now know the rest of the story.
A must read for all past and present Habitat supporters. I appreciate the way the tough issues were
dealt with - in an honest and open way. Millard and Linda Fuller always believed God’s calling on their
lives was to eliminate poverty housing & they have impacted the impoverished of the world in a big way
first through Habitat for Humanity and now through the Fuller Center for Housing.

Thank you, Bettie Youngs, for writing THE HOUSE THAT LOVE BUILT. I finally got to know the whole truth about the great injustice done to Millard Fuller. Talk about being persecuted for righteousness' sake, he was! It is a blessing to see how he and Linda responded, not with hatred and vengeance but with good will, still seeking to help and not compete with Habitat For Humanity. The Lord is a God of justice, and He will deal with the ones who treated the Fullers unjustly and ungratefully.
My husband and I have been friends of the Fullers since 1969 and have read most of Millard's books, but in this book we discovered many more interesting things about them we did not know. This book reveals what we have always known, that Millard's character is impeccable, and his actions spring from a deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ and for his fellow man.
Sadly, the lives of more and more Christian leaders in today's world are tainted with scandal. The House That Love Built is a book that helps restore confidence in Christians in public ministry. The book shows that true Christianity works. Forgiving your enemies can be a stepping stone to greater fruitfulness. I predict that the new Fuller Center for Housing will eventually eclipse the work of Habitat For Humanity, maybe not in the number of houses built, but in the number of changed lives for the kingdom of God.

There are few examples in this world of love in the larger sense of the word. THE HOUSE THAT LOVE BUILT is just such a story. This is the inspiring story of the love between Millard and Linda Fuller that has lasted a lifetime. In this book we also learn how the Fuller's love for God motivated their love for each other, their children, and their desire to make a real difference in the world. In turn, these various ways of loving manifested in a love for all humanity through a dedication and desire to serve that we seldom see on this Earth. I once had the pleasure of seeing Millard Fuller speak at a conference. He shared stories of the lives that have been touched in his work with Habitat for Humanity. Stories of families coming together, people being lifted out of poverty, elderly finding out that someone cared about their living circumstances in later life and much more. Millard asked the question regarding touching people in this way, "How much is that worth?" I'll say this much, it is well worth the price of this book, which will teach you a lot about love and how you can help make this Earth a house that is built on a foundation of love that everyone can share. -- Dr. Lisa Love, Beyond the Secret

Millard and Linda Fuller are international treasures, responsible for helping to house over one million people throughout the world. They gave up a world of material luxury to help make simple, decent housing for all, a matter of conscience.
The Fullers founded both Habitat For Humanity, International, and The Fuller Center For Housing. However, the Fullers were fired from Habitat for charges that were acknowledged by the Habitat Board as being unsubstantiated.
Habitat went from paying Millard less than eighty thousand dollars per year, to hiring a CEO who is earning over two hundred thousand dollars a year. They moved from their roots in Americus, Georgia to a much more expensive location in Atlanta. It seems as if the real reason the Fullers were let go was to enable to Board to change its direction from being a grass roots organization, to a corporately structured bureaucracy.
Rather than feel sorry for themselves after being treated so shabbily by the Habitat International Board, the Fullers started another low income housing organization. But they should never have had to have done that. Millard and Linda are heroes who deserve accolades, not ignominy. The Habitat Board should hang their collective heads in shame.
It is my hope that if the Nobel Peace Prize committee ever decides to give the award to someone who has worked to end poverty housing, it will be to the Fullers.
Bettie Youngs tells the Fuller's story with grace, love, and above all, restraint. She doesn't judge the Board, she lets their actions speak for themselves. You will be outraged. And you will want to contact the Fuller Center For Housing to see what you can do to help end poverty housing.
