In the Middle Ages stained glass formed an important part, but still only a part, of that interior colour decoration without which no church was considered complete; but in spite of its fragile nature it has on the whole survived the attacks of time, the fury of the Puritan, the apathy and neglect of the eighteenth century, and the sinister energies of the.

by Hugh Arnold (Author), Lawrence B. Saint (Illustrator). This book didn't have anything about the middle ages. It was a waste of time reading it. Do not read it. I also got the book in hope for some ideas as a artist who paints our church windows for the seasons. The only thing is it could have had more pictures.

It is an excellent book. It gives insight to the process of making stain glass windows which is not obvious and it divides medieval glass into three periods, which is founded on external factors as artistic ones. The writing is concise and to the point, giving insights to medieval glass I have not read elsewhere. The book is to be recommended if the aesthetics of medieval windows interests you. I am being a bit harsh on having no pictures.
The original did. If money was the motive it wasn't worth it. Get the original if you can.

Good pictures, when you can travel to see the real thing pictures can be the next best thing. I also got the book in hope for some ideas as a artist who paints our church windows for the seasons. Glad to add it to my collection of idea books. The only thing is it could have had more pictures.

Although the text is quite descriptive, it continually refers to Plates showing the referenced stained glass which are not included. Very disappointing!
