Most won't read this cover-to-cover (me included). I does however contain some good historical information about quilts, who made them and how quilting evolved into the modern era. From what I've read, there seems to be notations about the degree of difficulty for the more labor-intensive patterns. This should be especially helpful to quilters that don't want to find themselves underwater half way through a project. There are also lots and lots of quilt patterns, many of which I've never seen or heard of. It's worth noting that the whole book is in black & white. At first I was disappointed by this, but it really makes you focus on the quilt pattern and keeps someone's 'masterfully colored' creation from unduly influencing your pattern choice. Quilting has changed a lot since this book was written, but its information is still relevant for today's quilter.

I was unable to find this book for a pattern for a quilt I started 38 years ago. So I was grateful to be able to purchase a copy of this beloved 1970's classic.
Uaha
wife is so happy i was able to find this for her. it was recommended by several serious quilters, and we were lucky to find it at all, let alone at a great deal

I didn't find it helpful. There are newer tools and ways of doing things that make patchwork easier and accurate.

I bought this book in the 70's and it still has an honored place in my bookcase. Yes, I learned to quilt from it but more than that, I learned to think about handwork as craft and art. The book is fabulously funny as well. I didn't last long as a quilter but I've incorporated many of the designs into my knitting.

Every craft book should be this well written, clear in instruction and as well illustrated! I smile every time I pick it up or pass it on the bookcase. It is a masterwork.

The quilt world was fortunate to have Beth Gutcheon for a brief period of time. She has subsequently moved on to write several books of fiction and screenplays, also of merit. However, while she was in our clutches, she wrote one of the first intelligent books about quilting, a primer which did not "write down" to women who sewed. It is a book which assumed from the onset that quilters were more interested in exploring visual patterns and their impact, rather than making ducks-and-bunnies quilts (which, while perhaps appropriate for children, somehow became associated with female creativity in the 70's and 80's). This book was a welcome relief.
