Elmer the Patchwork Elephant (often shortened to Elmer) is a children's picture book series by the British author David McKee. Elmer was first published by Dobson Books in 1968, and re-issued with re-drawn illustrations in a slightly shortened version by Andersen Press in 1989. It was inspired by the mascot of the Bordeaux zoo (which closed in 1974) in France.

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. This book has clearly been well maintained and looked after thus far.

As Elmer the Patchwork Elephant turns 25, author David McKee illustrates the evolution of the children's character. Beloved by millions of pre-schoolers, Elmer the Elephant is showing no signs of a quarter-life crisis as he celebrates his 25th anniversary. To see how the character has changed over the years, author David McKee talked us through five key illustrations from the patchwork pachyderm's pantheon. 1) The first Elmer - 1989. This is the elephant from the first book and it's the first time we really see Elmer. We can see that the technique I used there is different. It's not just wash but I actually use crayon a bit over the colours.

The patchwork and colourful Elmer the elephant is instantly recognisable and helps even very young children explore the idea that we are all the same, but different. Elmer lives with a herd of elephants. But Elmer is different. He is a patchwork of beautiful and bold colours. Elmer is not elephant colour. Elmer is the life and soul of the herd and the source of laughter, fun and games. But Elmer is conscious that he doesn’t look the.

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant tries on some shades (Picture: David McKee). They say elephants never forget. But anyone who has read a children’s book in the past quarter of a century is unlikely to forget one particular elephant. A friendly beast whose skin is splashed with red, green, yellow, blue, white, black, orange, pink and purple squares, Elmer isn’t your typical elephant. But he is a very successful one.

This is my second copy of Elmer that I've had to purchase, because my kiddo loves it so much, and likes to carry it with him, to the extent that it was almost in pieces and was definitely falling apart. We read it often. It's a favorite in our house.

The children all love this book (ages 5, 3 and 1). It makes a lovely shower or baby gift with a stuffed elephant to go along with it. Would recommend it!

What a beautiful book! Elmer is different than the rest and only wants to be like everyone else. He learns a valuable lesson when he tries doing so.

I have loved the Elmer books since I read the first one... Who wouldn't love a nice bright elephant? I bought this book and the plush and another elephant book to send to an unknown child for a book exchange.

Such a great story about embracing our differences and being self confident. It stuck with me since I read it as a child. Highly recommend.

Fun children's book
I read this to my preschoolers for 5 days in a row at our group meeting time. By the end of the week they could tell it back to me. They loved it! They love to talk about what it means when a rain cloud "bursts" open and what "patchwork" means. They loved figuring out which elephant was Elmer when they were all "elephant colored." We talked about how the illustrator/author gave you a clue ("his eyes are open and the other ones are closed!") as to which one was him. And discussed why Elmer felt sad and lonely. They're ready for their own parade now. =)
