com and look up "Turret Mill Operation" by John Edwards. Funny, this subject comes up every once in a while, and every time I mention what would seem the utopian book on the subject, Turret Mill Operation, specifically targeting the most popular form of vertical milling ever devised in America, and yet ~no one~ ever mentions ever actually owning or reading a copy of this.

Awesome book on Bridgeport mills.

As represented, this book is for the beginner, but has useful information for more seasoned operators. I like the emphasis on safety, the overview of assessories to facilitate utility of the turret mill, the fact that the book contains the procedures for aligning a mill, and details for operation of the mill (including changing spindle speeds and cutter rotation speeds).

There are a number of things the author could do to improve the text. The index is woefully inadequate and many topics that are covered are not listed. In the section of the book on enhancing the precision of the mill the author covers installing ball screws in the X-Y & Z axes but missed an easy and readily inexpensive enhancement, which is the installation of Fenner or Segmented belts to reduce bearing wear and produce better finishes. Many of the readers may be in a position to purchase a mill. A section on checking out used machines with a checklist would be most helpful. In that section the relative difficulty in correcting problems associated with mills could also be presented. It is always challenging for an author to know at what point to truncate a discussion. I felt that more information could have been presented in association with some topics. Case in point, the indexing head, and procedure for gear hobbing is berift of detail. Could have had more on the horizontal milling conversions and angle heads.

This book is the best bet for anyone from the new beginner to the old hand as it bring a lot to the table for anyone no matter how much you think you already know. Great photos and lots of them after doing and reviewing this book you should be able to do almost anything with nothing at all. Yes I did like it. Even though I own a machine shop I still at times skim through this book to remind me of how much I forget. good luck ALL dray

This book is well written and covers the basics of operating a Bridgeport style knee mill. However, you will still need a factory manual in order to handle maintenance on the machine so some of the material is redundant. Also, other topics are more thoroughly covered in other books.
