Louis Szathmary (born Lajos István Szathmáry II June 2, 1919 – October 4, 1996) was a Hungarian-American chef, writer, and public personality. A pioneering force in the food service profession, he is best known for heading the Chicago restaurant The Bakery and writing the New York Times bestseller The Chef's Secret Cookbook. Szathmary's involvement with the early frozen food industry, his numerous cookbooks and articles and his persona established him as an icon in the culinary arts industry.

Both books are in the collection of more than 20,000 cookbooks and related materials donated by Louis Szathmary, former owner of the Bakery Restaurant in Chicago. The Algren book was a project to examine food of various regions as it related to immigration and settlement. Mr. Algren started it in the late 1930's as part of the Illinois Writers' Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, but never expanded it beyond the Midwest because of World War II. Szathmary bought the manuscript from the writer in 1975.

The Chef prepared my parents' 40th wedding anniversary dinner in Chicago for 96 healthy eaters, so I was already one of his greatest fans after having eaten at his restaurant many times before. So when I saw the chance to buy copies of some of his recipes, I was delighted. Listening to his stories and those of one of his childhood friends, who just happened to work with me, it made the recipes more personal and even taste better. Some are very easy to follow. But even those that are a bit more involved and more difficult, the effort is well worth it.

I own the original 1970's issue. Love it ! Excellent game reciepes. I used to dine in Louis's restaurant in Lincoln Park, Chicago years ago. The chef was a wonderful personality, always greeting customers. I bought this cookbook for my daughter, because her new husband hunts and fishes and has his own garden of vegetables and herbs. They will love it !

Memories of good food and good times at The Bakery Restaurant in Chicago. The Beef Wellington was unforgettable. The soups and sides were, too. And the recipes are here with thef chef's notes as well. Good reading even if you don't feel like cooking!
