Louis Szathmary (born Lajos István Szathmáry II June 2, 1919 – October 4, 1996) was a Hungarian-American chef, writer, and public personality. A pioneering force in the food service profession, he is best known for heading the Chicago restaurant The Bakery and writing the New York Times bestseller The Chef's Secret Cookbook. Szathmary's involvement with the early frozen food industry, his numerous cookbooks and articles and his persona established him as an icon in the culinary arts industry.

Both books are in the collection of more than 20,000 cookbooks and related materials donated by Louis Szathmary, former owner of the Bakery Restaurant in Chicago. The Algren book was a project to examine food of various regions as it related to immigration and settlement. Mr. Algren started it in the late 1930's as part of the Illinois Writers' Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, but never expanded it beyond the Midwest because of World War II. Szathmary bought the manuscript from the writer in 1975.
