Secured Transactions by James Brook is a terrible resource for anyone trying to get a handle on the class prior . I have had great success with other Examples and Explanations books in the past but this one misses the mark by a landslide.

Secured Transactions by James Brook is a terrible resource for anyone trying to get a handle on the class prior to an exam. The actual chapters are ridiculously short and uninformative. All of the information is presented in the examples and explanations. Although this may not come as a surprise considering the name of the book it is nonetheless very ineffective.

I've read 11 or so of the Examples and Explanations books while in Law School. For the most part, the series is great. The material is broken down into sections that make sense and the important points are made and remade with the examples.

Full disclosure -- my 3L year was far more relaxed than anyone had told me it was supposed to be. I had a full schedule of classes, numerous research projects to complete, a crazy personal life, etc. As such, Secured Transactions, a class I was taking to the Bar but was less "prioritized" than it should have been, fell by the wayside.

Essentially, by the time the class wrapped up, I was so far behind in the readings and homework that I at that point really had only a bare skeleton's idea of what the concept of Article 5 and the like was about, and nothing more. I was terrified.

Thankfully, I had purchased this Examples & Explanations book at the beginning of the semester as a sort of insurance (and, in my optimistic mind, as a book I'd be using all semester long). I dove into a week of going through all of my class notes and assignments, but also getting through as much of this E&E as I could. Long story short, I walked into that exam while not feeling confident, feeling far, far less terrified than I had a week before.

And I did just fine. Didn't ace the class, but did a-okay.

I'll start by saying that this book has all of the information you might ever need, and that if you're confused on a very simple concept, then hey it's probably in here...somewhere.

My issue with this book is that it is a terrible study aid for a law school final exam. I'm assuming that a person taking an exam would have some semblance of a familiarity with the subject before they even picked up this book. I mean heck, they took the class, presumably attended once or twice, and maybe even did some outlining before this. I bought this book to use as a way to read through some hypos and get some quick explanations (examples and explanations right?). This book is set up in the most inefficient manner ever. You waste 99% of time reading page long explanations of why a lender's security interest is valid and senior, before you get to the real point of the hypo: there's a purchase money security interest with super-priority that will trump the lender. OMG really?! Who didn't see this coming? All we really care about is the application of the relevant statutory sections. The answer literally could be two sentences. I am 100% aware of the fact that in an actual exam you will need to go through all of these steps, my issue is that the author does it needlessly for each explanation. The problem with this is that each explanation covers ONE ISSUE, and very rarely includes another issue, i.e. PMSI section tests PMSI, "Where to File" section tests only sufficiency the filing office chosen. Problem is that this is extremely inefficient. You have to read hundreds of examples just to learn the basics of each issue. 90% of law school exams are long, multiple page, issue spotting hypos. This book DOES NOT help you with issue spotting at all.

Instead, what you get is the author trying to be "cute" or "funny" with his prose. The only thing this accomplishes is extending the explanation of the world's simplest hypo covering A SINGLE ISSUE into a two page long read. 20 minutes later you palm-to-face yourself as your read the punchline of the explanation "but this doesn't matter because seller has a purchase money security interest and you have 20 days to perfect." Unless you have all the time in the world, you're better off Googling hypos and working through them on your own.

Not a bad book for outlining, but examples lack depth. They are too simple compared to the hypos we cover in class. This is obviously kind of a subjective assessment, but the examples are REALLY easy. Seems like author tries to substitute length of fact pattern for difficulty. For example, a fact pattern may take 2 pages, but the underlying priority battle has a very simple answer that requires maybe looking 1 or 2 things in Art. 9. On the other hand when I do the hypos my professor makes up I usually have to refer to at least several Art. 9 sections to figure out an ambiguously.

Instead of allowing the reader to read the rules, understand them and ultimately apply what they've learned to the examples this book presents virtually everything for the first time in the examples. In other parts the book simply tells you to look rules up with no explanation of how they actually function. I have had great success with other Examples and Explanations books in the past but this one misses the mark by a landslide. DON'T PURCHASE

This book is a great resource for reviewing prior to exams. The only things that kept this from a 5-star review were the fact that most of the material is in the form of explanations to the examples (rather than in the text prior to the examples as is the case with most of the books in this series) and that the writing style is a little goofy. That being said, however, the book is very clear and easy to understand.

great study aid.
grand star
This E&E is really good, it saved me from failing this course! It explains everything very well (like most E&Es do) and didn't bore me to tears (like the assigned textbook).
Reliable study aid.
