Pretty good book for all the basic knowledge you'll need for a Community Corrections class. Key terminology is explained in such a way that anyone without any familiarity of the topic can pick it up and understand.

This textbook, if required, would be the only way I would recommend purchasing it. Otherwise, this textbook is not suggested to be used in a university setting.

Why I say this:

There is information that is repeated, multiple times, often within the same paragraph. The author does so by rephrasing something, or reusing a phrase word-for-word. This is noticeable within each section, and even runs throughout chapters, and through the whole book. Therefore, not only is something repeated for the length of a chapter, it could be seen once again in a new chapter. I understand that a textbook is often used in an order other that how it is written, and therefore base knowledge is necessary to expand, yet sometimes it is overdone, and often incorrectly. Additionally, it could be stated that it is repeated to pound the information in, yet I do not see this as being true. The information is often simple: they want to rehabilitate the offender.... and a few lines later... the offender must be rehabilitated...this program therefore aims at rehabilitation.

The chapters are unnecessarily long due to this fact, and additional "fluff" information that is often irrelevant and often misplaced.

Although it is difficult to express the issue I have with this book, as well as the issues expressed by many of my peers, I can summarize and say this book is inadequate at creating a flow of cohesive and necessary information. It is not conducive to teaching a topic, and merely presents facts (and often blatant opinion, sexism, and lack of sensitivity) in a jumbled manner with lack of regards to placing it within understandably formed sections.

This was a poor book.
